In commemoration of Juneteenth, the newest American Federal Holiday celebrating the end of chattel slavery in the United States that was signed into law yesterday, the government offices of Carson City and Lyon County are closed.
The Carson City Senior Center is remaining open due to the short notice of the observance and wishes to continue offering meals and other services to seniors, but looks forward to celebrating next year.
All senior centers in Lyon County have closed for the day.
Douglas County chose to remain open today, according to Public Information Officer Melissa Blosser.
