  • Principal Jessica Daniels was raised to the roof Wednesday night where she'll wake up Thursday morning to lead an assembly.

When educational funding falls short, students and faculty at Carson Montessori in Carson City put their heads together this spring to raise the roof. And for their efforts, the school’s principal was tucked in Wednesday night, bedside adjacent to the roof where she agreed to sleep underneath the stars overhead.

In a scissor lift decorated like a tropical island, Principal Jessica Daniels was raised to the roof just as the sun dipped below the horizon as parents, students and faculty cheered her on. When they arrive at school Thursday morning, they’ll be greeted by Daniels from her rooftop perch, enjoying muffins and ready to participate in an all-school assembly.

“The students feel immense pride knowing that their hard work has paid off and seeing me sleep on the roof has created the fun and excitement that must be the foundation for a love of learning,” said Daniels.

Students recently set a goal of $6,000 for their Spring Spell-A-Thon fundraiser and they exceeded their goal by $1500, raising more than $7,500. As part of the deal, Daniels agreed to sleep on the roof if they met the goal.

The majority of the funds came the day before the deadline as excitement was building that their principal would be sleeping on the roof.

For the fundraiser, 100 percent of the money raised will be used for field trips. Carson Montessori, a free public school, sees value in getting students out to explore our community and all the educational opportunities that lie beyond the walls of the school. As a real-world, hands-on school, CMCS is constantly on the road traveling to learning sites in Northern Nevada.

All Carson Montessori fundraisers are academically based.

“We can choose to be crippled by limited funding or we can choose to make a positive difference. This is real world education at its finest,” said Daniels.
