Three fourth year students from Carson High School won the Nevada Day poster competition and were recognized by the Nevada Day, Inc. board Thursday morning.

Audrey Wood took first place for her design featuring this year’s parade theme and Nevada State Motto “All for our Country,” and her work will be featured on this year’s parade poster, program and button.

Cynthia Vargas won second place for 2024 and her design will be used for other Nevada Day promotions such as store merchandise available at the Nevada Gift Shop.

First place for the 2025 poster is Maddie Lind Smith.

Nevada Day, Inc. Board President Jennell Peck and Vice President Elizabeth Sevier stopped by the school to present a certificate to honor each student and a check for $100 for first and $50 for second place winners. The board hopes to stay one year ahead with parade planning which is why they chose next year’s winner this year.

“We are interested in getting more community involvement in the Nevada Day celebration and this contest was a great way to do that. ” Stated Peck, “We are so happy to have these students designs for this year and the next. They bring a youthful perspective which is important to the future of Nevada Day, and we appreciate their great work.”

The contest was open to a number of high schools in northern Nevada. Patricia Ababio, M.Ed, the Carson High School student’s graphic design teacher, said it was not a simple assignment.

“The challenge was to marry the idea of Nevada Day with the theme All for our Country. To make those two mesh together was a real challenge for the kids and they wanted Battle Born in there too. But they were super enthused about it and are really proud that their work was selected.”

The 2024 winners work will be displayed later in the year when the Nevada Day posters and buttons are unveiled. Stay tuned!
