Today, Wednesday April 29 head down to Cellar 8 Wine Bar for a worthy cause: April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and a fundraiser is being held for Carson City’s Xquisite, a nonprofit tackling trafficking and sexual assault prevention every day in the capital city.

Denim Day was established after a 1997 rape case of a teenage girl was overturned by the Italian Supreme Court based on the argument by the girl’s perpetrator, her 45-year-old driving instructor, that she was wearing “tight jeans.” He said that the girl must have helped him remove her jeans and therefore must have consented to the assault.

Women serving in the Italian Parliament were enraged by the decision and protested by wearing jeans on the steps of Parliament, beginning a worldwide movement protesting against the misconceptions surrounding sexual assault.

Today, Cellar 8 and Xquisite are joining the movement with a denim swap-n-shop, raffle, snacks and refreshments, and a short program featuring Carson City District Attorney Garrit Pruyt at 12:15 p.m. He will discuss what cases on sexual assault look like close to home, and what law enforcement does to stop these crimes from occurring, as well as how they work to prosecute them after the fact.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cellar 8 Wine bar, located at 408 N. Carson Street.
