On Thursday, February 19, the Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognized two outstanding community organizations for improving the lives of local residents.

Recognized at the club’s dinner meeting were Comstock Lode Quilters, represented by Marsha Strand and Mona Crandall Hook, and the WHYLD Foundation, represented by Vice President Elaina Barr.

Both groups were presented with $500 donations in support of their extraordinary work.

The Comstock Lode Quilters is a local organization composed of 25 to 30 quilters who have prepared “Quilts of Valor” for more than 10 years and for the last 11 years, a total of more than 2600 quilts.

They now label their quilts as “Quilts of Gratitude” making an impressive 339 quilts in 2025! These special quilts are awarded in a ceremony to Northern Nevada veterans participating in the Honor Flights program.

The second organization recognized is the Whyld Foundation, which works to ensure that no child in Carson City goes to bed hungry through their in-school food pantries and weekend meal programs.

They provide hope and nourishment to children in need. Their program is entirely donation based and sustained by the generosity of the people within our own community.

All donations stay right here in Carson City ensuring that neighbors are helping neighbors and that every contribution has an immediate, local impact.

In making the announcement, Leisure Hour Club President Ed Schnabel noted our community and the world is a better place with the outstanding work of these two organizations. He added that the dedication and commitment of the many volunteers and donors who support both these groups is to be commended.

The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. Continuing to celebrate its 129th year, the organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.
