Yamila Perez, owner of Marbella Salon, is ecstatic that her salon had been awarded Google’s prestigious award as one of the top three hair salons in Carson City for 2025, based on customer reviews.

Opening her salon as a first-time business owner on Nov. 19, 2019, Perez was fulfilling her dream of owning her own salon. As with any new business opening, it takes time to build clientele and reputation. Just as she was getting off the ground, four months later she and so many other businesses were forced to close as COVID-19 hit all but essential businesses.

Perez prevailed and today has a thriving salon that continues to grow as new clients find her front door thanks to word-of-mouth and great Google customer reviews.   Her business has grown so much that the salon now has three new entrepreneurs who share the once huge space bringing in additional clients who demand good styling and good service at an affordable price.

Joining Perez in caring for hair and skin are hairstylists Betel Jimenez and Maria Angulo, both immigrants from Mexico. The newest member is Taylor Norris, an esthetician who can make your skin glow.

While the salon seems to attract Latinos, Perez states, “We have clients from all ethnic backgrounds who just want a good cut at a great price without all the fuss.”   That “fuss” translates to not having your hair washed, if you choose, or expensive products put in your hair, although those are available.  You can be in and out of the salon in less than 30 minutes making it convenient for those who work.

Perez wields a mean scissor and has many young male clients who want their hair just so and cut in the latest style. She specializes in short cuts but can replicate any style from a picture. As one reviewer wrote, “You get a high quality haircut for a great price.” Children love the energetic salon. The upbeat music, treats, and Perez’s non-stop energy captivates kids – and adults. You won’t hear classical tunes here, instead tapping your foot to Latino dance music that will energize you.

Still today, Perez credits her luck to the good wishes presented to her by the late Mayor Bob Crowell as he assisted in cutting the ceremonial ribbon to launch her new venture.  However, we all know that to succeed you must have resilience to weather any storms and the fortitude to look to the future along with the luck.

National statistics show 50 percent of small businesses close within five years. Not only has Perez survived shaky beginnings, today her salon is growing more popular as she brings in more talented beauticians.

As we highlight successful women during Women’s History Month, we salute Perez who has mentored women entrepreneurs seeking encouragement from one who has shared their experience as they begin their entrepreneurial journey.

Marbella Salon translates to beautiful sea, a reminder of her Cuban roots. Open Tuesday-Saturday.  Walk-ins welcome, but reservations suggested since this is a busy salon.1817 N. Carson Street – Phone: 775-430-3687. Follow on Facebook here.
