Youth swimmers and wrestlers from Nevada and California were hitting their strides Saturday in the middle of regional championship competitions held in Carson City this weekend.

The Nevada State Folkstyle Wrestling Tournament got under way Saturday morning as hundreds of athletes and their families crowded the Mutlipurpose Athletic Center (MAC) on Russell Way.

Wrestlers as young as four up through high school ages are competing over two days. Saturday’s competitions featured younger wrestlers while the older athletes take to the mats on Sunday.

There are seven age divisions and 60 weight classes as part of this weekend’s tournament.

Meanwhile, over at the Carson Aquatic Facility off Roop and William streets, the Junior Olympics Short Course Swimming Championships for youth swimmers ages 14 and under are taking place for youth athletes from Northern Nevada and Northern California.

Swim competition began Friday and continues through Sunday.
