Rain turned to snow Tuesday and overnight temperatures dropped to below freezing, resulting in potentially slippery roads for the Wednesday morning commute.
Motorists are advised to watch for areas of black ice on the highways and roadways in and around Carson City.
According to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), Interstate 580 between Carson City and Reno, has chains or snow tires requires for about 15 minutes near the county line.
On U.S. Highway 50 West, including Spooner Summit, chains or snow tires are required from the Carson City and Douglas County lines to about 7.6 miles east toward the Nevada state capital as well for 14.6 miles along Lake Tahoe’s east shore, NDOT said.
Traction tires or devices are required for 12 miles on State Route 208 on Kingsbury Grade, starting at mile post zero, as well as for about 2.5 miles between Douglas and Lyon counties on SR 207 near the Smith Valley.
U.S. Highway 395 in southern Douglas County also requires chains or snow tires this morning from just above the state line to mile post 16.3.
The Comstock along SR 341 also has chains or snow tires required, NDOT said, including 6.3 miles up Geiger Grade in Washoe County and for about nine miles from Storey into Lyon counties.
There are traction tires and devices required on SR 28 from about the Douglas County line and to 11 miles into Washoe County, NDOT reported.
A winter storm warning for the Carson City area remains in effect until about 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports, with wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour (mph) in wind-prone areas and sustained from the southwest 10-20 mph.
Carson City temperature currently sits at about 31 degrees, the NWS said, and a high of about 35 is expected Wednesday.
There is a 30 percent chance of snow showers Wednesday leading to partly sunny skies later and breezy conditions, the NWS reported.
