Douglas County is continuing work on its Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Action Plan, a comprehensive initiative to improve roadway safety and reduce traffic-related deaths and serious injuries across the county.

Developed through community input and supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the plan will guide future policies, programs, and infrastructure investments that make local roads safer for everyone—whether walking, biking, driving, or riding transit.

The SS4A Action Plan applies the Safe System Approach, which recognizes that people make mistakes and that roadway design and management should prevent those mistakes from resulting in fatalities or serious harm. The plan will use data analysis and public feedback to identify safety challenges, develop evidence-based recommendations, and foster collaboration among local and regional agencies.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

Public engagement opportunities remain central to the plan’s development.

  • Douglas County will host a Safe Streets for All Open House on March 18, 2026, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center Dining Room (1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, NV 89410). Community members are invited to swing by for any length of time to learn more about the initiative, review progress, and share input to help shape the final recommendations.
  • A short online survey is also available through March 31, 2026. Residents can click here to take the survey:surveymonkey.com/r/52S6DNS
  • As part of the project timeline, the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners will receive an informational presentation on the plan during its March 5, 2026, meeting.

When completed later this year, the Safe Streets for All Action Plan will provide a data-driven framework for reducing roadway fatalities and improving mobility options countywide. The finalized plan will also position Douglas County to pursue future state and federal grant opportunities aimed at implementing safety improvements and infrastructure projects identified through this process.
