Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong released more details in the shooting Sunday night that left a Carson City man dead. James Lay, 32, of Carson City, was fatally shot in the chest Sunday night in the 900 block of West Washington Street.
The suspect was identified by witnesses as David Grimes, 32, of Dayton. Grimes was taken into custody voluntarily at 10:10 p.m. Sunday night by Carson City Sheriffs deputies. He remains in custody charged with murder. Bail is at $250,000 bail and his court appearance will be Feb. 7 at 8 a.m.
While the incident remains under investigation, witnesses have provided information that the altercation may have been sparked by a domestic argument following a child custody exchange. Following a confrontation inside the residence, Grimes and Lay continued the incident into the street in front of the residence.
Grimes allegedly produced a weapon, a 357 revolver, and shot Lay one time in the chest, and then fled the area. None of the children present at the residence witnessed the altercation in the street, Furlong said.
After about an hour hour, Grimes contacted the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and expressed a desire to turn himself in to authorities. A short time later, Grimes arrived at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and turned himself over to arresting officers, said Furlong.
