City of Sparks announces passing of Mayor Ron Smith

After an almost two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, Sparks Mayor Ron Smith has died. He was 71 years old.

Mayor Smith was officially sworn in as the 25th Mayor of Sparks on November 13, 2018. He was elected to the Sparks City Council in November 2006 and was re-elected to four-year terms in 2008, 2012 and 2016. He served as Sparks Mayor Pro Tempore from 2012-2018.

The Mile High Jazz Band Association presents a jazz-related drive-in movie, “High Society,” on Wednesday, August 19, and Thursday, August 20, as part of the 2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival.

It will be shown in the parking lot of the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King Street, in Carson City. Admission is free. Show time is available when calling for reservations, which are required for each vehicle and can be made by calling 775-883-4154.

Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning delivered more than 20 brand-new box fans for Carson City seniors during the annual 2020 KOLO Cares Fan Drive.

This is the second year the Carson City Senior Center has participated in the drive, distributing fans to seniors who either do not have air conditioning or who may not be able to afford to run it.

Adopt a Duck is one of the Nevada Humane Society’s biggest fundraising events of the year, and this year despite COVID-19, it will continue! Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch reports Wednesday that the #NumbersFire southeast of Gardnerville has grown to 20,500 acres. The Bureau of Land Management reports a lower figure, 18,000 acres, with 5 percent containment, or a fuel break around the fire.

UPDATE: Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch reports Wednesday that the #NumbersFire southeast of Gardnerville has grown to 20,500 acres. The Bureau of Land Management reports a lower figure, 18,000 acres, with 5 percent containment. The recommended evacuations for the Bodie Flats and Pineview areas have been lifted. Only residents are allowed to these areas.

UPDATE 3:40PM From Douglas County: The Numbers Fire is 0 percent contained and the fire is estimated to be at 10,000 acres as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the county's Facebook page. Multiple local, state and federal fire agencies are assisting and there are numerous fire apparatus and firefighters working on the scene.

Equipment on scene includes dozers, handcrews and aircraft. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. No injuries have been reported at this time. The Carson Valley Inn and the Holiday Inn Express are serving as evacuation sites. The fire is on Washoe tribe land south of Gardnerville, continues to put up dense smoke. The fire has burned at least 1 home and 10 outbuildings.

The rummage sale, at 251 Jeanell Dr., suite 4, is open noon-5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with a BBQ on Saturdays.

The Jazz and Beyond festival committee announces that the winner of the 2020 poster and program cover art contest is Karen Kreyeski, for her entry, “After Midnight Jam.” The winner of the T-shirt design is Evan Tynan, for “2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival Logo.” These were selected from ten entries to highlight the 17th annual Carson City music and art festival.

Carson City Kiwanis announces Virtual Meals on Wheels Fundraiser as a success

The Virtual Meals on Wheels fundraiser hosted by Carson City Kiwanis proved to be a big success.

The event raised $3,855.44, including a $1,000 anonymous donation and a donation from the club itself of $1,000 donation.
