Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial run nears finish, ceremony Thursday at state capitol

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Relay Run continues this week across Nevada where it will end in Carson City this Thursday with a ceremony at the state capitol.

The run began April 26 at the Southern Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial in Las Vegas and continues this week through Thursday, May 4, ending with a ceremony at the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, Nevada State Capitol/Legislative Grounds.

The run honors those listed on the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Carson City. It is designed to bring public attention to those listed on the Memorial and to the dedication and sacrifice made by all Nevada Law Enforcement Officers.

The Memorial Run and gathering also brings together Nevada Law Enforcement Officers and supporters for the single purpose of supporting each other with an endeavor to support the goals and purpose of the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Commission.

Supported by the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police Association and the Nevada Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, various law enforcement employee associations including rank and file peace officers and deputies have participated and will be at the ceremony Thursday.

The 26th Annual Memorial Run is being organized as a means to bring recognition to National Police Memorial Week and all Nevada law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

Each leg of the Memorial run represents an Officer listed on the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. As of 2023, 152 names are now engraved on the Memorial.

Method of the Memorial Run
Each participant shall run a specific distance carrying a baton containing the names of the officers on the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The Memorial Run and individual runners shall be directed by specific area coordinators who will be in charge of their respective areas.

Runners from each area jurisdiction shall be selected as runners; coordinators may designate runners as necessary. All law enforcement entities or jurisdictions are welcome and will be allowed to participate. Runners must be from the ranks of active Nevada peace officers, retired peace officers, and Federal Law Enforcement agencies.

The purpose is to bring attention to National Police Memorial Week May 9- 15, 2023 and the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony, on May 4, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in Carson City.

This week's schedule
On May 2, 2023, Tuesday, Departure, 6:00 A.M., (Runners Assemble) El Capitan Hotel, Hawthorne Nevada.
Runners Proceed North on U.S. 95 to Schurz, alternate 95 to Yerington, Nevada West on State Route 208 through Smith/Wellington to Lyon/Douglas County Line (approx. 88 miles).

On May 3, 2023, Wednesday, Departure, 7:00 A.M. (Runners Assemble) Wellington, Nevada on Nevada Highway 208. Runners Proceed West on State Route 208 to U.S. 395 North through Gardnerville/Minden to Carson City ending at the Memorial site. (Approx. 45 miles).

On May 4, 2023, Thursday, 1:00 P.M., delivery of Baton to the Memorial ceremony by designated runners.

The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., will visit Douglas County for the second time this spring. The Moving Wall, which has been viewed around the country since 1984, will will be in Minden for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Tuesday evening to a vehicle crash involving a motorcycle in the area of East 5th Street and Saliman Road.

Traffic was slow going in Carson City along Highway 50 East following two crashes Tuesday, according to Nevada State Police. There was a crash reported at around 3:50 p.m. on US-50 East and Nye Lane. There was a second crash at 5:18 p.m. reportedly near US-50 and Brown Street.
Injuries are unknown at this time. Motorists can expect delays.
