Carson City Arbor Day 2010 Celebration
The Carson City Shade Tree Council will be hosting its annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 30, 2010. The celebration will be held in the park across from the State Library on the corner of Stewart and Musser Streets and will begin at 5:30 p.m. and is scheduled to last an hour.
The Council selected the site due to its historical importance to Carson City. Charles W. Friend had his home and observatory at this location. The observatory was Nevada’s first and since his death in 1907, he has been recognized by the Association of Weather Services as a pioneer in weather service west of the Rockies.
At the celebration, the Shade Tree Council will present the George Washington Ferris Award to the Nevada National Guard, Greenhouse Garden Center, Healthy Trees and the Carson City School District. The Nevada National Guard relocated approximately 40 trees in 2009 when it began construction of its solar power plant. Instead of cutting the trees down, the Guard worked with Greenhouse Garden Center, Healthy Trees and the Carson City School District to relocate the trees to schools throughout Carson City.
Julie Roberts from Governor Gibbons’ Office will make the presentation on the Council’s behalf. This marks the first year the Council has presented more than one George Washington Ferris Award. The George Washington Ferris awards will be accepted by Colonel David Cantrell on behalf of the Nevada National Guard; Richard Stokes, Superintendent, Carson City School District on behalf of the Carson City School District; Dave Ruf on behalf of Greenhouse Nursery and Tom Henderson on behalf of Healthy Trees.
Governor Gibbons has issued a proclamation supporting Arbor Day in Nevada. The last Friday in April has been designated as Arbor Day in Nevada by the Nevada Revised Statutes.
Mayor Bob Crowell will read a proclamation from the Carson City Board of Supervisors, regarding the importance of planting trees and declaring April 30, 2010 as "Arbor Day in Carson City, Nevada"."
For the 16th consecutive year, the council will receive a Tree City USA Award from the Arbor Day Foundation. Susan Stead, Nevada Division of Forestry, will make the presentation on behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation. Carson City is one of eleven Tree City USA-certified communities in Nevada.
The tree planting is scheduled at 6 p.m. This year, the Council will plant a Greensire Linden, which was selected by the staff of State Buildings and Grounds. The tree, which is the Council’s gift to the people of Nevada, was paid for with monies the Council raised from its annual Fall Tree Care Seminar.
