The Nevada Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation officially re-launched LifeWorksNV, the statewide work-based learning hub for student career seekers looking for information and opportunities in registered apprenticeship, internships, career and technical education programs, career exploration and more.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 13,727 for the week ending August 1, down 4,663 claims, or 25.4 percent, compared to last week’s total of 18,390 claims.

This is the first decline in weekly initial claims since week ending June 20. Through the week ending August 1, there have been 624,817 initial claims filed in 2020, 603,165 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

CARSON CITY — Hundreds of Nevada National Guardsmen will remain on duty for the remainder of 2020 in support of the state’s COVID-19 response, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced Tuesday.

Yvonne J. David, resident of Carson City, Nevada, passed away on July 16, 2020. Yvonne was born on May 5, 1944 to the parents Nellie (Alma) Lovingier and Arthur A. Lovingier in San Francisco, CA. Yvonne arrived in Carson City in 1977 and began to work for the State of Nevada. She loved working for Western Nevada College, assisting teachers and staff before retiring.

This is the fourth consecutive week of increases in regular initial claims. Through the week ending July 18, there have been 592,700 initial claims filed in 2020, 571,048 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Fall high school sports are now temporarily postponed in Carson City, Lyon, Douglas and Storey counties as well as the rest of Nevada. State playoffs are not expected to take place this year, as well. CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum will reopen to the public on Monday, July 20, thanks to a generous donation from the family of a former Stewart Indian School principal. Opened in January and closed to the public in March because of the current health crisis, the Cultural Center faced severe budget cuts.

SPARKS, Nev. — The Nevada Department of Agriculture Animal Disease Laboratory has confirmed seven positive rabies cases in bats in Clark and Washoe Counties. Rabies is most commonly found in bats, and bat activity tends to peak between the months of May and October throughout Nevada.

CARSON CITY — The Western Nevada Development District, which assists communities in public and private partnerships, has been awarded $400,000 in CARES Act Recovery assistance to help respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and drive economic development planning going forward.
