Thunderstorms bring lightning strikes around Carson City
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 09/04/2019 - 8:21pmA series of thunderstorms moved into the Carson City and Carson Valley area Wednesday afternoon and evening bringing lightning and a few brush fires to the region. As of Wednesday 8:20 p.m. the storms had moved out of the Carson City, Carson Valley area. More thunderstorms are expected Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Lightning touches off fast moving wildfire in Jacks Valley
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 09/04/2019 - 4:39pmUPDATE 5:52PM: According to Douglas County's Facebook page: "Things appear to be settling down out on Jacks Valley due to a little help from the rain. Residents are still being asked to remain aware!" Also noteworthy is the brush unit that Carson City sent to fight the fire, has since returned to Carson City.
According to CCFD Chief Sean Slamon, there were no fires burning in Kings Canyon. The Fire Department received calls, checked it out, and the smoke was drift smoke from the Jacks Valley Fire. CCFD did knock down a fire at residence on Muldoon Street in town. The small fire was caused by a lightning strike on the roof of the residence.

UPDATE 5:39PM: According to Douglas County Dispatch Jack’s Valley road has been reopened, and the Record Courier in Douglas County reported via twitter that forward progress has stopped with an assist from the rain.

Firefighters use ALERTWildfire cameras to monitor, put brakes on potential catastrophic wildfires
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 09/03/2019 - 9:03amRENO — As fire hazard has built through the summer, ALERTWildfire, a network of mountaintop cameras that helps fire managers spot and monitor fires over large swaths of land, has been on a frenzied pace to reach its goal of adding 300 cameras to the network in the western U.S. by the end of the year. In the past three years the network has been involved with nearly 1,000 fires.
Wildfire near Topaz Ranch Estates 40 percent contained, full containment by Saturday

UPDATE 10:33PM: Evacuations have been lifted for residents east of Canyon Drive but the evacuation center remains open. Firefighters will continue to fight the Canyon Fire through the evening, according to the Douglas County government Twitter feed. The fire is estimated at 1,500 acres.

The utility says via its website that it should have power restored in most areas by 11:30 p.m. The brush fire at Silver Saddle Ranch has been extinguished.

The fire is out. The cause is under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Carson City Fire responds to house fire caused by space heater Friday morning
Submitted by Kelsey Penrose on Fri, 07/19/2019 - 10:08amCarson City firefighters responded to a report of a non-emergency house fire just after 10 p.m. on Friday morning after a resident called to say her space heater had caught fire.
At the time of the call, the fire was out but she wanted firefighters to check it out to make sure she was no longer in danger.
When using a space heater or air conditioning unit, always make sure the area is free of debris and that nothing is covering the unit that could catch fire or impede airflow in and out of the unit.
Nothing further.

UPDATE 2:35PM: The wildfire burning at the Alpine County Airport near Markleeville has burned 65 acres, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Containment is unknown at this time. There are reports that Indian Creek Campground has been evacuated.

Firefighters were called to a house fire on Saturday evening on Cascade Drive.
As of 9 p.m., the fire was contained and responders in scene were mopping up. There appears to be significant damage to the back of the house.
There are no other structures threatened. The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed.

This event will be a barbecue and a speaking engagement. We will have good food and music. It is Saturday, July 20.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed large amounts of smoke near residential structures and quickly gained access to the brush fire adjacent to the structures. See the video here.
The fire was declared under control at approximately 1:10 p.m. Crews will remain on scene until released.
