SUMMARY:Greetings from the Salton Sea… Expect the Unexpected
DESCRIPTION:The history of the Salton Sea may well be the most bizarre of any body of water on Earth. Born from an unbelievable “oops\,” transformed into a glittering playground for the rich and famous\, and later notorious as foul smelling Lake Odoroma\, California’s largest lake has lived more lives than most towns. In this fast paced program\, David and Gayle Woodruff dive deep into the Sea’s many mysteries and wacky true tales\, using vintage photos and extensive research to illuminate an inland sea that sits below sea level—and often below expectations. From outlandish schemes to stranger than fiction episodes\, these stories prove that when it comes to the Salton Sea\, truth is stranger than fiction! The free program is at the Carson City Senior Center 911 Beverly Dr. Carson City. Call David at 760 920-8061 for more information. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Unexpected Turns…Unforgettable Memories\, a recollection of family Road Trips
DESCRIPTION:Unexpected Turns…Unforgettable Memories\, a recollection of family road trips. May 26 at 6:30pm at the Carson City Senior Center. In this first‑person story telling program\, local historians David & Gayle Woodruff recount their so-called “cherished” family vacations\, sharing vivid memories of monuments of mystery\, culinary curiosities\, cross country chain smoking…and the many small mishaps (and triumphs) that shaped each journey. Through stories drawn from their own childhood vacations and family lore\, the program blends humor\, reflection\, and regional color to illuminate how everyday people experienced the open road—turning personal anecdotes into a window of a shared American past. The program is free and no reservations required. 911 Beverly Dr Carson City. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:A History Program - “Difficult Times…Extraordinary Lives”
DESCRIPTION:Using extensive research and seldom scene images\, historians David & Gayle Woodruff delve into the ‘human heart’ of Manzanar Internment Camp\, revealing a few little known stories of Japanese Americans whose lives were upended and reshaped behind its barbed wire horizon. Through stark moments of loss\, flashes of defiance\, and the fragile rituals that helped people hold onto identity during a very challenging time\, these vignettes illuminate the extraordinary resilience of ordinary individuals. These true tales of history remind us that Manzanar was not merely a wartime policy—it was a crucible of human endurance\, dignity\, and quiet\, unyielding hope. A 55-minute moving and reflective slideshow. Free and no reservations required. Call David for more information. (760) 920-8061 – Carson City Senior Center \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:A History Program - “Giants of the Sierra
DESCRIPTION:The Eastern Sierra’s history is shaped by people whose vision\, labor\, and generosity left the region stronger than they found it\, and this 55 minute slide show—presented by local historian David Woodruff—brings together three such figures: Norman Biltz\, the land baron and behind the scenes political force who helped define Nevada’s modern identity; Duane Bliss\, the timber and transportation pioneer whose enterprises opened the Lake Tahoe Basin to a new era of growth; and Ken Lloyd\, a devoted community member whose quiet service\, athletic excellence\, and unwavering commitment to others has enriched local life for decades. Their paths were different\, but each carved a legacy of building\, stewarding\, and giving—threads that together form a portrait of this magical region. SUMMARY:A History Presentation: Lights…Camera…Sierras!
DESCRIPTION:At the Carson City Senior Center. The Eastern Sierra and Lone Pine region has long served as Hollywood’s rugged double for the American West—and far beyond. This history slideshow explores over a century of cinematic legacy\, from early silent Westerns to blockbuster hits like Iron Man and cult classics like Tremors. With more than 400 productions filmed in the iconic Alabama Hills\, the slideshow reveals how this dramatic landscape has stood in for India in Gunga Din (1939)\, frontier towns in countless cowboy epics\, and even alien worlds. Using archival photos\, behind-the-scenes stories\, and vintage posters\, local historians David & Gayle Woodruff bring to life the area’s transformation into a living backlot\, while honoring the local people who helped shape its film heritage. Whether you’re a film buff or a lover of desert drama\, this visual journey captures the magic of a place where the West was—and still is won! 911 Beverly Dr\, Carson City\, NV 89706 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Obscure History of the Eastern Sierra - Part 3
DESCRIPTION:At the Carson City Senior Center-“Obscure History of the Eastern Sierra-Part Three.” In “part three” of this series\, local historians David & Gayle Woodruff continue a reflective look at some of the Eastern Sierra’s deep\, rich\, and “little known” history. The “premier” subjects of our region are well known and have been extensively covered in numerous books\, documentaries\, and films. But there are several unique and lesser-known tales that are often overlooked and unappreciated. Using vintage photos and extensive research\, the Woodruffs recount a few of these esoteric anecdotes\, in a 55-minute slide show presentation. From the bizarre story of plans to build a tram to the very top of Mt. Whitney…to the amusing early history of Heavenly Valley Ski area\, the unique true tales are interesting\, entertaining and amusing. The program is free and no reservations are required. Call David at 760 920-8061 for more information. 911 Beverly Dr\, Carson City\, NV 89706 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:A. Chautauqua presentation of Death Valley Scotty
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday July 8 at 1:30PM at the Carson City Senior Center- A Chautauqua performance of Death Valley Scotty and his benefactor Bessie Johnson. No one is more closely tied to the mysterious lore of Death Valley than Walter Scott. His tales of fabulous gold mines\, dangerous desperados and opulent desert castles placed him and Death Valley on the front pages of newspapers for over fifty years…and kept historians endlessly occupied trying to sort out the truth from his tall tales. Death Valley historians David and Gayle Woodruff\, assume the characters of the inscrutable\, “Death Valley Scotty” and the wife of his benefactor and the real owner of Scotty’s Castle\, prim and scrupulous Bessie Johnson\, in a 60-minute Chautauqua performance. The program is free and reservations are not required. Call David at 760 920-8061 for more information. SUMMARY:Tenacious Women of the Eastern Sierra - A History Slide Show
DESCRIPTION:The Eastern Sierra Nevada has attracted brave mountaineers\, adventurous ramblers and inspired thinkers from time immemorial. But its not just men that have found their “best selves” in the shadow of these mighty peaks. From brave Native Americans who often led their people through great challenges\, to one of America’s greatest wordsmiths\, the Eastern Sierra has been home to many fierce and determined women. Join local historians and authors David & Gayle Woodruff in a 55-minute slide show as they take a closer look at a few of these remarkable “local” ladies. The free program is May 13 at 1:30PM at the Carson City Senior Center 911 Beverly Dr.Carson City. Call 760 920-8061 for more information. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related
