Tom Gilbertson 'Recent Works' exhibition featured at Carson City courthouse

In his paintings, Tom Gilbertson creates a visual imbalance between the central floral image and the industrial overlays. The Capital City Arts Initiative’s exhibition, "Recent Works", presents work by Gilbertson at the Courthouse Gallery. The exhibition began June 5 and runs through Sept. 26, 2024.

CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Wednesday, June 12, 5 to 6:30p.m. with the artist’s introduction at 5:30. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City; the gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

About his art, Gilbertson said, “My recent work consists of images of flowers layered and commingled with anachronistic line images of defunct mechanical devices and scientific drawings of plant pathologies. Most of the line images were mined from the internet. I sometimes impose a grid onto the plane of the painting, using dots or squares … a reminder that all 2-D artwork is a lie. Watercolor, gouache, acrylic, image transfers, metal leaf, and paper are the materials that I use. The resulting image is initially alluring but upon closer examination is fraught with tension, challenging us to consider our place in the world. The titles I use are in no way meant to influence, direct, or otherwise color the viewers’ experience.”

Describing his personal history, Gilbertson said, “I was born in the shadow of 'the bomb' towards the end of the first half of the 20th century. Formative events in my life were: the electrocutions of Ethyl and Julius Rosenberg, duck and cover exercises, the deaths of Marilyn, JFK, Martin, Bobby, and Malcolm, the Cuban missile scare....and the Vietnam War. An early memory is drawing in the dirt with a stick, probably at about 4 years old. Drawing has been a regular activity of mine ever since. When I was 17 or so, after reading Sartre's trilogy, I talked to an army recruiter in the hope of going to army language school. I ended up in French Indochina for 3 years dressed somewhat like a large pickle. I never set foot in the army's language school, but I did learn to speak Korean and Vietnamese fairly well. I went to college on the GI Bill after I returned to the States ..... worked as a fruit picker, high school teacher, graphic artist, furniture mover, photographer, offset printer, itinerant artist, architectural drafter, art gallery guy, entrepreneur, college professor, gas station attendant, and picture framer. At the dawn of the new century, I snagged the elusive tenure-track teaching job at a small community college near the Mexico/California border. After 12 years there, I retired to a semi-rural area north of Reno and east of the Sierra Nevada mountains. There I pass my days trying to grow food (and weeds) in my garden, watch Scandinavian, French, and UK who-dun-its on TV with my wife Imelda, spend time in my studio, hang out with my dog, Jaxon, pick on my guitar, take short afternoon naps, pull weeds, and try to figure out the meaning of the big questions in life over a good cup of coffee. The shadows and the weeds are as dense as ever.”

Carson City man arrested on child pornography charges

A 67-year-old man was arrested Thursday for felony charges related to possession of child pornography, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Following an investigation and a search warrant, detectives developed probable cause and arrested Darrell Wayne Thomas of Carson City on charges related to the alleged possession of child pornography. He is being held at the Carson City Jail on $50,000 bail.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with the Northern Nevada Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations executed the search warrant at a Carson City home Thursday related to a child pornography investigation, according to a CCSO news release.

The arrest follows an investigation initiated in March 2024, when the ICAC Task Force received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Detectives determined that child sexual abuse materials were being downloaded at a Carson City residence. Detectives executed a search warrant and seized several items of evidentiary value, the release states.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is a part of the region’s fight against child exploitation by dedicating a detective to the ICAC Task Force. These cybercrimes are investigated closely with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Sparks Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Nevada Attorney General’s Office, and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations.

Carson City Library’s themed ‘Travel Through Time,’ Summer Reading Challenge kickoff party happening today

It’s time to get reading with the Carson City Library’s Summer Reading Challenge kicking off Saturday, June 8 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Carson City Library, located at 900 N. Roop St. in Carson City.

The theme, “Travel Through Time,” encourages participants to embark on a literary adventure by logging reading hours and following along through different eras with a host of exciting events and activities scheduled. The challenge is open to all ages, from children to adults.

The Summer Reading Challenge starts Saturday, June 8, with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Carson City Kiwanis on the front lawn of the library from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tickets for the breakfast are $10 for individuals and $15 for families with all proceeds benefiting the Carson City Library. Then stick around for the launch event starting at 12 p.m. featuring a variety of games, activities and prizes all themed around "Travel Through Time."

“Sharing the importance and fun of reading is what we aim to do through our reading challenges,” said Joy Holt, JD, MSLS, library director for the Carson City Library. “Our Carson City community members have shown us in a big way their value of reading and the challenge makes reading that much more of a family, friend, or group activity and brings people together. The theme, ‘Travel Through Time,” promises a unique and fun way to explore different periods of history through books and activities.”

Throughout the summer, participants can earn raffle entries by logging their reading minutes and attending library programs. The Summer Reading Challenge will conclude with a Wrap-Up Party on Saturday, August 17, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., where the raffle drawing will take place.

Saturday, June 15, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Silver City is an introductory class on how to build, light and maintain a coal forge fire with a hand cranked blower, proper hammering techniques, drawing, pointing, twisting, punching and how to work hot steel over a coal forge. Students will take home the basic knowledge of forging and their own handmade forged decorative article.

The Carson City School District provided the following list of community activities for or in support of youth organizations throughout the summer.

Carson High Football will host a Senator Youth Football Camp for athletes K-8th grade, Monday through Wednesday, June 17-19. The camp will run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Carson High School Football Field. The three-day clinic is designed to polish football techniques and skills will be lead by Carson High Football Staff and Players. Several Carson City playgrounds are closed due to vandalism, damage; long repair times prove challenging

For a smaller sized city, Carson City’s 18 playgrounds offers a lot of places to play for local children.

However, due to vandalism and damages, around 40 percent of these playgrounds are or were recently out of commission.

Of the 18 playgrounds in the city, seven are new or have had significant rehabilitation projects associated with them in the past five years according to Parks Director Jennifer Budge.

“Maintenance and construction of playgrounds are a significant expense, with new playgrounds costing well over $500,000 depending on the size and scope of the playground,” Budge said.

Most recently, the city replaced Blackwell’s Pond Park playground for approximately $656,000, which also included landscaping and other site improvements.

“Due to the substantial expense, the city has made significant efforts to reinvest in existing playgrounds where possible, and replacing older playgrounds that are well beyond their useful life.”

The city has used grant funding to replace playgrounds and add inclusive opportunities for users of all abilities, such as the improvements to Ross Gold Park which became the city’s first accessible playground.

However, there are still many playgrounds that are over twenty years old which are frequently vandalized and require closures.

“The older playgrounds are increasingly becoming difficult to locate replacement parts, as they are no longer in stock, often have to be fabricated, causing significant lead time, even for a basic retrofit project or a part replacement,” Budge said.

At times, this has led to a wait time of eight months to up to two years simply to reopen playgrounds that will pass an inspection by a certified playground safety inspector.

“Further, the amount of certified installers for playgrounds are sparse as well, especially in Northern Nevada,” Budge added.

There are currently eight playgrounds that are or were recently closed due to damage and vandalism:

Mills Park- Slide was vandalized, but the city had a replacement slide that was installed. Playground is open.
Long Ranch Park- Garden Shop Landscaping recently installed fencing around the playground. Playground is open.
Park Terrace Park (next to Empire Elementary)- Playground was damaged-replacement parts ordered. Playground is closed.
Ronald D. Wilson Park-Slide and safety surfacing were damaged-surfacing has been replaced, estimated ship date from the vendor for the slide is June 14th. Playground is closed.
Governor’s Field- Slide separation and crack in slide (possible vandalism)-replacement slide ordered. Playground is closed.
Sunland Vista-Slide collapsed (possible vandalism)-replacement slide ordered. Playground is closed.
Sonoma Park-Swings damaged-swings were removed and replacement swings ordered. Playground is open.
Riley Circle-Swings had damaged hardware-swings were removed and replacement swings ordered. Playground is open.

When asked how the community can help mitigate the impacts caused by vandalism and damage, Budge said the best way is the old rule of: If you see something, say something.

“Often times frequent misuse of the equipment, creates a piece of equipment to fail overtime,” Budge said. “The public can help through timely reporting.”
  With regard to vandalism/misuse, the public can report issues in progress to non-emergency dispatch at 775-887-COPS and a Park Ranger or Deputy will respond.

TAMBA to Host 12th Annual Tahoe Mountain Bike Festival

The Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA), in conjunction with The Divided Sky and South Lake Brewing Company, is hosting the 12th annual Tahoe Mountain Bike Festival on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23, 2024.

The weekend-long event will kick-off with a mountain bike Demo Day at Corral Trail on Saturday, June 22. Registered riders will have the chance to try a range of bikes from participating brands including Specialized, Trek, Intense, Cannondale, Yeti, GasGas and Husqvarna, and enjoy exclusive shuttles to Corral Trail.

Sunday, June 23 will begin with the ever-popular rides. The Tahoe Triple Crown will return as this year’s advanced ride, while intermediate riders will be able to enjoy the new TAMBA Paradise Loop. Thanks to the support of the US Forest Service and California State Parks, TAMBA is excited to offer a fun intermediate mountain bike ride which will begin and end at Tahoe Paradise Park, eliminating the need to drive from a trailhead back to the main festival site.

The main festival will begin at 12pm on June 23 at the stunning Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers, CA. This fun, family-friendly festival will include live music from JeNes N The Juice and Simon Kurth & Friends, food trucks, a beer garden, a vendor village, a Kids’ Zone, and a bike valet hosted by the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition.

Riders interested in participating in the Demo Day and/or rides are strongly encouraged to pre-register for these events at tamba.org/tahoemtbfest as tickets are limited. Entry to the festival on Sunday is free of charge. All proceeds from the event go directly towards building and maintaining multi-use trails in the Lake Tahoe area.

Each year on July 5, Tahoe residents and visitors turn out for the largest cleanup of the year to remove litter from Lake Tahoe’s shores. You can help Keep Tahoe Blue by volunteering at a beach cleanup sites around the Lake!

The cleanup happens July 5 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at multiple locations around Tahoe.

Sierra Nevada Realtors host Golf Tournament June 14 to benefit Northern Nevada high school graduates

Sierra Nevada REALTORS is hosting their 21st Annual Alyce McCraken Golf Tournament at the Toiyabe Golf Course on June 14 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sponsorships and team sign-ups are currently available, with proceeds from the event supporting scholarships for high school graduates in the six counties SNR members work and live in Northern Nevada.

Attendees will also be able to participate in various games and raffle prizes, enjoy beverages, and be provided with complimentary breakfast and lunch.

The registration deadline for teams and sponsors is June 7 at 5 p.m.; six open teams remain.

Tickets for a group of four to participate are $600, which includes access to the mimosa and bloody mary bar, breakfast burritos, swag bags, mulligan tickets, raffle tickets, and lunch. Click here to download the registration form.

Carson City Supervisors hear update on mercury contamination, superfund site

Carson City Supervisors heard an update from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Thursday regarding the mercury contamination superfund site along the Carson River.

During the Comstock Lode, a new process was discovered for refining silver and gold ore, known as the Washoe Process which involved 14 million pounds mercury entering more than 130 river miles spanning five counties.

Now, today, the repercussions can still be found all along the valley’s waterways.

The main concern, according to Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim, EPA researcher, for Carson City comes from children’s eating dirt while playing in their residential yards within the site, which is around Empire Ranch, and people consuming fish from the river or participating in some traditional tribal practices such as using cattails that could be contaminated.

However, there is no major risk from using recreational, including swimming.

Residential soil samples have been take on a voluntary basis by obtaining permission for sampling from the owner or tenant of a home.

Then, if soil samples prove contamination, a clean-up will be undertaken.

Within the Empire Ranch development, seven houses agreed to be sampled.

Of the seven, none had results exceeded the mercury levels that would trigger a clean up.

However, not all homes were sampled, which could include up to another 20 homes that could potentially be contaminated.

However, Ibrahim said the EPA is not concerned as the results of the houses sampled came out “really, really low.”

Moving forward, the EPA proposes to require soil sampling prior to construction within the area, as well as a proposal to provide education to communicates through signage and outreach about mercury exposure.

Supervisor Stacey Giomi said there is a conflict in the area between FEMA and the EPA.

“If there’s a disaster declaration, then FEMA funds cannot be used to deal with the disaster because of the superfund declaration,” Giomi said.

Ibrahim said they are aware of the issue and are trying to navigate moving forward with FEMA.

Giomi said he doesn’t believe the clean up will ever be finished, and questioned whether it’s even worth it to have the site designated as a superfund.

“This is a very unusual superfund site; it’s massive in area for one, for two there’s no responsible parties, which is one of the key components of a superfund: to get the responsible parties for mitigation,” Giomi said. “Do you think we’re ever going to be out from under this? The reality is, I don’t think that it is possible to ever completely clean this up. Is it worth even having it as a superfund site if there’s never going to be an end to the clean up?”

Supervisor Lisa Schuette said there are things they can do to help mitigate the issues caused by the site, even if a full clean up isn’t possible, such as addressing bank erosion during construction.

“If we want to fix it, we need the tools to do that, and you don’t wait until the problem’s huge to fix it, right? We try to fix it as we go along.”

Pioneer students highlighted at J4NG Career Development Conference

Pioneer Academy’s Jobs for Nevada’s Graduates (J4NG) teacher Mrs. Laura Gardner took two students to participate with more than 160 other students from across the state of Nevada in the conference in Las Vegas.

Senior Brooklynn Case competed in Employability Skills and placed 11 overall. Sophomore Blayne Vader competed in the Entrepreneurship skills and placed 10 overall.

The Career Development Conference has been the most sought-after event among J4NG staff and students in the last decade. It is an opportunity to bring school programs throughout Nevada together, and to compete, network and engage in workshops.

While it is meant to be a friendly competition among peers, students are eager to try to bring the state trophy back to their program.

Mrs. Gardner said she was very proud of her students and how they represented themselves and Pioneer Academy. She stated Brooklynn and Blayne were honored to represent the school and have the opportunity to compete.

In addition to the competitions, Brooklynn and Blayne attended workshops and breakout sessions that promoted career and personal growth skills.

Both expressed the best part of the conference was meeting and networking with other J4NG students and making new friends.
