Carson City weather: Strong, potentially damaging winds expected through Friday
With valley rain and mountain snow making its way into the region overnight and early Thursday morning, the brunt of a weather system now moving into the Sierra and Carson City region will begin with increasingly strong wind conditions, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning.
Expect valley rain and accumulating snow in the Sierra Nevada through Friday. Roads will be slick and delays are possible. Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times.
The High Wind Warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday night through 7 p.m. Friday. Winds will begin to increase Thursday afternoon, potentially becoming strong and damaging by late afternoon and Friday, according to the weather service.
Winds will be from the southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Gusts up to 60 mph possible by early evening with a lull expected overnight in the valleys.
For Friday, winds will be from the southwest to west 25 to 35 mph with gusts 55 to 65 mph. Wind prone locations could see gusts of 75 mph.
Winds could cause travel impacts for high profile vehicles in addition to turbulence, wind shear and mountain wave activity for aviation. Winds may be strong enough to cause damage and blow high profile vehicles over late this afternoon and on Friday, especially along the Highway 395 corridor.
The weather service advises to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, holiday decorations, trampolines and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. It's also a good idea to bring in the small pets. Forecasters say the winds could cause power issues, so it is a good idea to have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and candles.
For Carson City, rain showers will continue through early Saturday, with a 50 percent chance of rain Thursday night, a 40 percent chance of rain Friday, 30 percent chance Friday night and a 20 percent chance Saturday morning, according to the weather service. Skies will begin clearing Sunday, with sunny conditions and a high of 46.
For Lake Tahoe, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday for areas above 7,000 feet. Moderate to heavy snow is expected with additional snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches expected above 7,000 feet through Friday morning with localized areas up to 20 inches along the crest. Highest totals expected west of Highway 89.
