Christmas tree cutting permits available for Pine Nuts, nearby Carson City BLM District mountains

The Carson City District of the Bureau of Land Management will begin selling Christmas tree cutting permits beginning Monday, Nov. 15. The permit is valid from the date of purchase through Dec. 25, 2021.

To purchase a Christmas tree permit online, go here and search for Nevada, Carson City District Office.

The permit allows the purchaser to cut a pinyon pine or juniper tree (the cutting of all other tree species is prohibited) on BLM-administered lands, primary in the Pine Nut Mountains between Carson City and Yerington, the Clan Alpine and Desatoya Mountains east of Fallon and the Excelsior Mountains southeast of Hawthorne.

No cutting of trees within wilderness study areas. Cutters are urged to be conscious of and not cut Christmas trees near city or residential areas.

The cost per Christmas tree permit is $5. Upon purchase of a Christmas tree permit, maps and permit stipulations will be provided. No more than 10 Christmas tree permits may be purchased by one individual; the permits are for individual use only.

Permits are available at the Carson City BLM District Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Rd, Carson City. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information call 775-885-6000.

Meanwhile, Christmas tree permits offered by the U.S. Forest Service will be available in the Lake Tahoe Basin beginning Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021. Forest officials were evaluating the availability of trees after the Caldor Fire but determined enough areas around the lake had trees. Some of the normal cutting areas may not be available but maps will be provided at the time of purchase.

This permit allows you to cut a Christmas tree within designated areas of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
There are 1,500 of the $10 permits available and all sales will be done online, no in-person sales (sales also have a $2.50 service fee added).

Wildfires have been reported this evening in the Dayton and Silver Springs/Stagecoach areas, with Carson City Fire Department being asked to help as part of a mutual aid effort, according to dispatch.
