Carson City Choir students perform Fall Concert at Community Center
On Wednesday Oct. 13, Carson High School’s Theater and Choir departments performed their fall recital in the Bob Boldrick Community Theater in the Carson City Community Center. Choir teacher Andrew Sonnermaker and Theater Teacher Andi Wilkerson lead ensemble groups such as Musical Theater, Choir l/ll, Concert and Chamber Choir.
Aren Long was the performance’s accompanist for the students.
The show opened at 7 p.m. with theater numbers from musicals like “Pippin” and “The Greatest Showman.” During these songs students also performed choreography by Wilkerson.
Choir l is the entry level class for students looking to begin choir. They sang “The Rainbow” by David N. Childs and Christina Rossitti.
Choir II sang a Traditional Spiritual entitled “Shine on Me” arranged by Rollo Dilworth.
At Carson High School, the Concert Choir consists of 33 students. The Concert Choir sang “O Lux Beatissima” by Howard Helvey, of which the text is in Latin. The translation provided is as follows, “Oh Light most blessed, fill the inmost heart of all thy faithful. Without your grace, there is nothing in us, nothing that is not harmful.”
They also sung a piece called “Bright Morning Stars” arranged by Alice Parker which featured two soloists Ethne Myler and Jack Mack, both seniors at Carson High School.
The Chamber Choir then performed “Sweet Day” by George Herbert and Ralph Vaughan Williams and a creepy-themed song entitled “Daemon Irrepit Callidus” by Gyorgy Obra. The latter song was also in Latin.
Chamber Choir members usually undergo a vigorous audition process to be in the choir, but this year is an exception. However, the students currently a part of the Chamber Choir have gone through the process at one point.
Finally, at the end of the show, students made their way into the front of the audience and spread out along the front wall. They all held hands between themselves and sang “Kumbaya” by Paul Sjolund.
Sonnermaker explained that students expressed they missed performing and would promise to hold hands and sing Kumbaya until the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. The students performing this song were fulfilling a long-running inside joke among the performers.
There will also be a Carson High School Fall Band Concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20.
