Carson City School Board to discuss policy changes regarding sustainability, restorative discipline, English learning and more
The next Carson City School District School Board meeting will take place tonight, Tuesday Sept. 27 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room within the Carson City Community Center.
Items up for discussion at the school board include restorative justice, updates to the English Learner program, policies regarding sustainability and more.
— On second reading, a discussion and possible action will be held to approve proposed changes to an English Learner Program. Changes include updating language, including referring to the program as English Language Acquisition and Development (ELAD) as opposed to the previously used Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).
— A first reading of a new draft policy for sustainability at the district level will be held regarding the district’s commitment toward conservation. The policy in part states: “Sustainability is an important priority that is critical to the future. The District, therefore, is committed to being an active participant, partner, and educator of conservation and environmental health efforts.”
— A possible adoption will be held regarding proposed changes to the district-wide Restorative Discipline Plan as well as a discussion on proposed changes regarding to a Student Conduct and Discipline regulation.
Restorative techniques are in contrast to traditional punishments as a way to provide a positive learning environment for all students. The proposed plan states: “Restorative practices in schools are strategies that use the underlying principles of restorative justice instead of traditional punishment measures. They represent a positive step forward in helping all students — from elementary school through middle school and high school — learn how to navigate conflict resolution, take ownership of their behavior, and practice empathy, perspective-taking, and forgiveness.”
One change to the current policy also includes providing support via a Native American liaison, as well as changes to when parents are notified when students are temporarily removed from the classroom.
In the student conduct and discipline regulation, changes include language updates as well as designating which person is in charge of various notifications, scheduling, and case management.
— The Carson High School Homecoming King and Queen will be introduced to the board, and activities at both Carson High School and Pioneer Academy will be reported on.
