National Weather Service issues Dense Smoke Advisory for Reno, Carson City region
UPDATE: The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Dense Smoke Advisory for the greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas including Sparks, Verdi, Gardnerville and Virginia City. The advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday. Visibility is below 3 miles with unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups. The advisory says to expect periods of dense smoke and unhealthy air quality through Thursday morning. Winds may help improve air quality into Wednesday night before smoke returns to the area by early Thursday morning.

Drift smoke from nearby fires has clouded skies around the Carson City region on Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service advises there will be a large area of haze across the region for the next few days due to numerous fires across California and stronger west winds.
Smoke of a thicker particulate matter from the Claremont, North Complex, Loyalton, and W-5 fires may cause hazardous air quality and rapid visibility reductions depending upon how active these fires burn over the next few days.
As of around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, air quality in Carson City, Carson Valley and Reno-Sparks was in the "moderate" range, according to airnow.gov. Levels may increase or decrease depending on the winds.
The weather service advises people, especially those with respiratory issues, to stay indoors as much as possible when smoke is present. Avoid strenuous activity, especially if you are sensitive to poor air quality, such as the elderly, children, and anyone with chronic illness or respiratory problems. Smoke can irritate your lungs, cause inflammation, affect your immune system, and make you more prone to lung infections.
Meanwhile, there's a Red Flag Warning, which remains in effect from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday afternoon for much of the region due to expected gusty winds and low humidity. There's also a Heat Advisory in effect Wednesday for much of the region until 11 p.m. and there's a lake wind advisory from 1 to 9 p.m. for Washoe Lake.
