My friend Kate asked me to come by and look at her bridal wreath spireas today. These plants are lush, green and over five feet tall; Kate was wondering how to prune them. She wants them to bloom more. The plants are under the eaves of the house, some facing south, and others facing west, all in filtered light from pines.

Wildfire smoke continues to fill the lower valleys and Sierra on Sunday, bringing poor air quality to the region. Air quality due to the Tamarack, Dixie, Fly, and Bootleg wildfires burning in the region has caused another spike in the Air Quality Index, with readings in the "unhealthy category" and "very unhealthy" range from Gardnerville to Reno, according to AirNow.gov.

In the summer months, both bears and humans are active in the Lake Tahoe Basin, which means there is a lot to think about when living, visiting, or recreating in the area this time of year.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of July 26 through August 1, 2021. Closures and lane restrictions are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

MINDEN — Douglas County is currently conducting preliminary exterior damage assessments of structures including homes, outbuildings, wellhouses and barns in areas where fire activity has been observed. All evacuations for Douglas County remain in place and 395 remains closed for public safety concerns.

UPDATE 2:22PM: Alpine County Sheriff's have removed mandatory evacuations for the area of Mesa Vista, according to Tamarack Fire Information.

Residents must have proof of residence to bypass the road closure. SR 88 will remain closed to non-residents. Additional evacuations are possible due to fire activity, said the Alpine County news release.

Today, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak declared a state of emergency in Douglas County in response to the ongoing Tamarack Fire.

Declaring a state of emergency ensures resources from the local, state, and federal levels are available to assist as needed during this emergency.

A 27-year-old Reno man was arrested by Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputies early Friday morning for felony possession of a stolen vehicle and being in possession of burglary tools as well as a misdemeanor warrant out of Reno.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating an endangered missing person. Madeline Delaney, 37, was reported missing by a loved one and last seen around FISH in Carson City, Nevada on 138 East Long Street at 11:30 a.m. on July 20, 2021.

UPDATE 3:14PM: Alpine County has finalized the structure damage report and interactive map for Alpine residents to check the status of their structures from the fire. The map can be found here https://www.alpinecountyca.gov/593/Maps. According to Tamarack Fire Information, the map will be updated every 24 hours.

UPDATE 9:27AM: The U.S. Forest Service reports the Tamarack fire has now grown to 58,417 acres and that estimated containment of the fire is August 31. The fire remains 4 percent contained as of Friday morning.

The Tamarack Fire has crossed US 395 in Douglas County and has grown 2,500 acres. Additionally, power to the line that provides electricity to the Coleville and Walker area has been instructed to be turned off at the request of the Tamarack Fire Incident Command Center, according to Liberty Utilities Lake Tahoe.
