Carson City's Kings Canyon trailhead improvements to feature more parking, amenities
The Kings Canyon Road and Trailhead Project, located west of Carson City, will make improvements to Kings Canyon Road, as well as construct a new 25 stall parking area at the existing trailhead. Other amenities will include installation of a vault toilet, ADA parking stall and OHV/equestrian trailer parking. Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-July and likely continue through October.
The project is made possible because of a Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) grant awarded to the Carson City Regional Transportation Commission in 2018. Participating agencies include the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA), the Carson City Public Works Department, the Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department, and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District.
The working days and hours for the project are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Limited work is allowed on Saturdays to expedite improvements at the upper creek crossing, no work will be allowed on Sundays. The Kings Canyon Trailhead will be closed Monday through Friday throughout the duration of construction. The Trailhead will reopen on the weekends, with limited parking available. Access to the dirt portion of Kings Canyon Road will remain open throughout the project.

In addition to the work occurring on Kings Canyon Road and Trailhead Parking Area, a future drainage and re-grading project further up Kings Canyon Road is planned for later this fall in cooperation between Carson City and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
This project includes repair and maintenance of the first two miles of dirt road, from the Kings Canyon Trailhead to the saddle, as well as culvert replacement and drainage improvements to the creek. Work is anticipated to begin in November and additional trailhead closures will be implemented at that time.
