Carson City area weather: Thunderstorms in eastern Sierra may develop across western Nevada
Thunderstorms will continue to develop over the eastern Sierra and along the California-Nevada state line south of Lake Tahoe through Tuesday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A few thunderstorms may also develop across western Nevada and northeast California late this afternoon and into the evening.
Strong outflow winds over 50 mph, small hail and brief periods of heavy rain may accompany the stronger thunderstorms. Lightning strikes may also trigger wildfires. Forecasters advise those with outdoor activities should have a Plan B and quick access to shelter should a thunderstorm approach your location, according to a special NWS statement.
Locations impacted include Gardnerville, Topaz lake, Wellington, Smith, Oasis, Hawthorne, Tioga Pass, Mammoth Lakes, Bodie, Chalfant, Crowley Lake, Sonora Pass, Benton, June Lake, Bridgeport, Lee Vining, Twin Lakes, Toms Place, Mono Lake and Coleville.
The weather service has upgraded its Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning for thunderstorms and strong outflow wind through 11 p.m. Tuesday night.
The Red Flag Warning extends through the northern Sierra Front and includes Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Washoe and Lyon counties, Churchill and Eastern Mineral counties, the Greater Lake Tahoe and Truckee area, and the Lahontan Basin.
The weather service states thunderstorms could bring minimal rainfall and a higher risk of dry lightning strikes.
