Historic Nevada State Prison tours sold out, more planned at later dates

UPDATE 3:25PM Thursday: Tours this weekend and June 5 for the historic Nevada State Prison in Carson City are now filled and sold out. More tours will be announced at a later date at the website here.

Be one of the first to go to prison. Not for anything you might have done, but for the history. The storied Nevada State Prison in Carson City will be open for public tours this weekend.

You'll be regaled with tales of prisoners past and hear the stories of the only prison ever to allow gambling inside the walls. So much history here. The NSP can be added to our other museums such as the railroad museum, the amazing state museum/mint and the Stewart Indian Museum.

Reservations a must:
On Saturday, May 29; Monday, May 31; and Saturday, June 5 we are offering four tour events on each day: 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, and 1 p.m. Tickets are $10.75 each, which includes the booking fee.

Carson City Symphony Association announces the Joyful Noise Carson Children’s Choir will begin Fall Semester rehearsals on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 4, at Shepherd of the Sierra Church, 3680 US Highway 395 South in Carson City.

Northern Cal/Neva residents Bonnie Porter and David Kotzebue, both disabled veterans, recently announced their intentions to marry. Ms. Porter and Mr. Kotzebue both have service-related disabilities, so their nuptials are planned for Veterans' Day.

Most toxins found in electronic waste are known as persistent, bioaccumulative toxins or PBTs and can be directly traced to a variety of debilitating and deadly diseases.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of State Parks administers grant funds from the Recreational Trails Program of the Federal Highway Administration. Approximately $1.2 million in funding is available for the 2019 fiscal year. Applications are due by November 9, 2018.

A postseason appearance wasn’t in the cards for the Reno Aces this season.

The Fresno Grizzlies’ come-from-behind 7-6 victory Saturday clinched the Pacific Northern Division with a 76-55 record. This marks the second playoff appearance in four seasons for the Grizzlies, a minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros.

A 64 year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Carson City Sheriff's Office on a felony charge of using a minor child as the subject of sexual portrayal, a Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report said.

I had already written out this morning's column ahead of time when I learned of U.S. Sen. John McCain's passing.

His death has changed the course of my day, because now I am writing to remember the man who earned the media moniker of "Maverick," and the reputation of someone who usually went his own way.
