Carson City area weather: Valley rain showers, Sierra snow for Presidents' Day
The last of three weekend weather systems has moved into the Sierra and western Nevada region this Washington's birthday, also known as Presidents' Day. Forecasters say the system is the weakest of three, with a chance of some snow accumulation in the Sierra and a chance of rain showers along the valley floors.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until 10 p.m. Monday for the greater Lake Tahoe area, with snow accumulations of 3 to 10 inches possible above 7,000 feet. Gusty winds are also expected on Monday for the Sierra.
According to the weather service, though most of the snow and travel impacts are likely Monday morning, bands of snow showers may continue through Monday afternoon and evening near the Sierra and in northeast California, producing quick drops in visibility and patchy slick conditions.
The storm exits the region on Tuesday with a break through midweek. Another weak to moderate storm is possible for late Thursday into Friday.
For valley locations, however, the weather system is expected to bring a chance of rain showers. For Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, there's a 30 percent chance of rain, mainly before 10 a.m. Otherwise, we're looking at partly sunny skies with a high near 51. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph.
