Carson City deputies make arrests for suspected felony domestic battery, weapon and DUI offenses

A 35-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday for suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Jeremiah Ray Hopkins was arrested at 2:28 a.m. in the 1800 block of North Carson Street.

According to the booking report, deputies were dispatched to the area in reference to a physical domestic battery. The reporting party advised that a male was choking a female in a vehicle that was parked in a parking lot. The caller advised the male fled on foot in an unknown direction.

A deputy located the male suspect, who was out of breath, and asked what he was up to. The male identified himself as "Jay" and then later gave his name. He stated he had gotten into a fight with his girlfriend and that he was walking around to calm down, according to the report. The deputy noticed his right ring finger was bleeding.

Deputies were advised that witnesses said it was the same man who had been choking/strangling the victim in the vehicle, the report states. One witness said they yelled out the window to that man and called law enforcement. The witness stated the suspect let go of the victim when deputies arrived on scene, the report states.

Deputies read the suspect his Miranda rights and he stated he understood his rights. He stated he and his girlfriend were fighting over keys to a vehicle he had just purchased. He said that as he tried to pull the keys away, the woman put her hand on his face and pushed him away, the report states.

The report noted the man had scratches on the left side of his face, light abrasions on the left side of his neck and that his right ring finger was bleeding. The man stated he injured his finger at work, the report states.

He was placed into custody for suspicion of domestic battery with strangulation, a felony offense. Bail: $15,000.

— A 28-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday morning for suspicion of gross misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon, being in possession of a firearm while intoxicated, DUI and resisting officers.

According to the booking report, a deputy observed a vehicle traveling northbound on Edmonds Drive. The driver turned onto Highway 50 and traveled westbound in the eastbound lane, driving on Highway 50 in the wrong direction for approximately 200 yards.

A deputy initiated a traffic stop. The man pulled into the center lane, and eventually pulled to the shoulder of Highway 50. As the officer made a driver's side approach, the deputy could see someone in the backseat behind the driver, the report states.

The officer asked the driver to roll down the back window as they were tinted and dirty. The driver refused to roll down the back window. The deputy ordered the rear passenger to place his hands on the back of the driver seat, which he did briefly, the arrest report states.

The deputy contacted the suspect through the partially opened driver's side window. The deputy could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The officer gave the driver several commands to exit the vehicle, which he refused, the report states. The officer attempted to open the door but it was locked.

The officer reached in the partially opened driver's side window and unlocked the door and opened it from the outside. With the driver door opened the deputy again gave the driver several commands to exit the vehicle, which he refused, the report states.

The person who was still seated in the back took his hands off the back of the driver seat and placed his hands in his pockets. Another deputy ordered the man to get his hands out of his pockets and put them back on the seat, the report states.

The driver continued to refuse to get out of the vehicle. The deputy took control of the driver's right arm, placing him in an arm lock, and gave him several commands to exit the vehicle, which he continued to refuse. Meanwhile, the front passenger was yelling and screaming at both deputies on scene.

More deputies arrived and the person in the back seat was detained. As officers attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle, a sergeant asked if he had any weapons on him. The man admitted to having a firearm on his right hip. The sergeant removed a Spring XD 9mm from under the man's jacket. The handgun was holstered in a holster that was located under a jacket the man was wearing, the report states.

The man was removed from the vehicle and placed into custody. The deputy could smell an odor of alcohol on his breath. The man admitted to having a few alcoholic drinks while he was gambling, the report states. The other person in the vehicle, continued yelling and using profanity. He was released from the scene.

Deputies transported the driver to jail and asked the man if he would submit to standardized field sobriety tests. The man declined to submit to the tests. The officer read the man the request for evidentiary testing. The man refused a breath and blood test, the report states.

At around 1:30 a.m. the deputy applied for and was granted a seizure order to obtain two vials of blood. The man was booked into Carson City jail for suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, DUI, and resisting an officer. Total bail amount listed: $5,500.
