Sierra Junior Tennis Association hosts Junior Tennis Tournament at Carson High Saturday
Sierra Junior Tennis Association is pleased to announce that 32 junior tennis players will compete in the first Sierra Junior Tennis Association (SJTA) tournament hosted at Carson High School today, Saturday, July 30.
The tournament is a fundraiser for Carson High School’s Boys and Girls Tennis Teams whose season starts in August.
Several Carson City athletes, along with players from Reno, Truckee, Minden, Lake Tahoe, and the San Francisco Bay Area, will compete for medals and for a chance to train with the University of Nevada-Reno (UNR) Division I tennis squad.
SJTA is a local 501(c)3 non-profit that supports growing junior tennis in Northern Nevada/Lake Tahoe. The mission is to provide charitable and educational programs to promote the development of junior tennis as a means of healthful recreation and physical fitness in our regional area. Each year, SJTA holds an annual Grand Prix series of tournaments (May – Oct) at courts throughout the region.
Tournament play is an integral part of a junior tennis player’s development. The top four athletes from the Grand Prix series will earn a free training camp at UNR with college players and coaches in preparation for the summer tournament season.
SJTA’s volunteer staff partnered with Adam Whatley, Carson High teacher and coach, and Eldon Wilson, certified United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) coach to host this tournament at Carson High School. SJTA is interested in Carson High hosting two fundraising tournaments next year, one that will benefit the High School teams and the other to support the renovation of the tennis courts at Centennial Park.
Matches begin July 30 at 8:00am at Carson High School. Courts can be accessed behind the school near the National Guard facility.
Carson City High School students will be volunteering to assist with set up and coordination at the tournament. SJTA is providing the players water, snacks, medals, goodie bags, sunscreen and two cases of tennis balls for the high school teams! Local supporters are bringing shade structures, misters, and water! The tournament is free for the public to watch so come support this local junior tennis event. Thank you to SJTA, Carson High School and everyone volunteering to make the first SJTA tournament in Carson as success!
