Carson Library Director to speak at Monday's Democratic luncheon
Speaking at the June 5th Democratic luncheon will be Carson City library director Joy Holt. She will catch us up on all of library's many doings, and is prepared to consider suggestions from the audience for even more doings.
Joy Holt's resume includes experience as a library aide, library assistant, academic student reference librarian, assistant library director, digital services librarian, assistant to the state librarian and deputy library director.
Joy has spoken fondly of her experiences growing up in Winnemucca, working as a library aide in the eighth grade. She also worked part time at her college library. As Assistant Humboldt County Library Director, she opened a branch in the rural town of Denio, near the Oregon border. She later recalled that it meant a tremendous amount to that community. She now calls the Carson City library her home, and describes it aptly as “a community within a community.” She adds that libraries “should always be about information access and the ability to have your quality of life improve.”
Joy holds a bachelor's degree in history from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon and a Master of Science in Library Science from University of North Texas in Denton. While studying for those degrees she played in student dramas, was on the debate team, and served as the new student orientation team leader. She later earned a Juris Doctor from Charleston School of Law. There she served as treasurer of the Children's Advocacy and Family Law Society, chaired the Student Bar Association's judicial committee, judged the mock trial competition and served as mentor and bailiff at the moot court. She also volunteered at the tax assistance program.
For years before beginning her legal studies, Joy worked in accountancy at a Charleston-based casual and fine dining restaurant chain. While a student there she did legal work at a Charleston law firm specializing in personal injury and medical malpractice. Her extensive compliment of skills includes accountancy, legal research and writing, taxation, compliance, Microsoft Office applications and the French language.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, June 5th, and may be attended in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Joy Holt will take the floor after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30 PM. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should contact Rich Dunn at richdunn@aol.com.
