SUMMARY:Virginia City celebrates Independence Day and America 250 with a full day of festivities
DESCRIPTION:Virginia City celebrates Independence Day and America 250 with a full day of festivities \n\n\n\n Historic celebration features parade\, live entertainment and fireworks over the Comstock \n\n\n\nVirginia City\, Nev. –  Red\, white and blue will once again line the historic streets of Virginia City as thousands gather for the town’s annual Fourth of July Extravaganza. As the nation also celebrates America’s 250th birthday\, it is set to be a full day of patriotic festivities. The celebration begins Saturday\, July 4\, at noon with the Fourth of July Parade down C Street and continues with family-friendly activities and special events. At 6 p.m.\, David John & the Comstock Cowboys will perform a free concert in the Bucket of Blood parking lot before fireworks light up the evening sky at dusk. Visitors can find a complete schedule of events and activities at visitvirginiacitynv.com/4th-of-july.  \n\n\n\n“There’s something timeless about celebrating the Fourth of July in Virginia City\,” said Todd Tuttle\, tourism director for Virginia City. “As the nation commemorates America’s 250th anniversary\, it’s a fitting place to celebrate Independence Day and reflect on the role Nevada and the Comstock played in shaping the American West and the Nation. We encourage visitors to spend the day exploring the town’s museums\, historic attractions and local businesses and stay the night to experience everything Virginia City has to offer.” \n\n\n\nIn addition to the town-wide festivities\, several local venues are hosting exclusive Fourth of July experiences: \n\n\n\n●       For those looking for a more intimate experience\, St. Mary’s Art Center will host “An Intimate Fourth of July Spectacular\,” a celebration honoring the center’s 150th anniversary and America’s 250th birthday. The event features live music by The Other Brothers\, a silent auction\, catered appetizers\, drinks and a prime view of the fireworks. Tickets will be available soon at stmarysartcenter.org.   \n\n\n\n●       Mackay Mansion Museum will host its popular Fireworks & S’mores event beginning at 7 p.m. Guests can enjoy roasting s’mores while taking in Virginia City’s Fourth of July fireworks display from the mansion’s balcony. This 18+ event is limited to 35 guests and tickets are $35 per person. Advance reservations are required due to limited space. More information and tickets are available at therealmackaymansion.com.  \n\n\n\n●       Fourth Ward School Museum will hold a Fireworks Watch Party at 8 p.m.\, offering rare access to its historic balcony and fourth-floor attic spaces\, which are typically closed to the public. Guests will enjoy live music\, food\, one complimentary beverage and views of Virginia City’s official fireworks display at dusk. Attendance is limited. Tickets are available at Eventbrite. \n\n\n\n●       The Roasting House will host a Fourth of July Watch Party\, offering guests another opportunity to take in Virginia City’s fireworks display. \n\n\n\n●       St. Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church will hold its annual Fourth of July Bake Sale featuring homemade treats and baked goods. \n\n\n\n●       Gold Hill Hotel will offer an early Fourth of July dinner service before the evening’s festivities begin. \n\n\n\n●       Silverland Bistro & Bar will offer paid parking for optimal viewing of the Fireworks and will be open late after the show.  \n\n\n\n●       Additional celebrations will take place throughout town\, including special dining experiences\, community gatherings and excursions aboard the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad. \n\n\n\nVirginia City’s Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza is made possible in part through the continued support of Silverland Inn & Suites\, which serves as the launch location for the annual fireworks display. \n\n\n\nAs the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States\, Virginia City’s Fourth of July celebration offers an opportunity to honor America’s birthday while surrounded by historic landmarks and sites that helped shape Nevada’s path to statehood. Between festivities\, visitors can explore Virginia City’s museums\, underground mine tours\, shops\, restaurants and historic attractions.  \n\n\n\nVisitors are encouraged to prepare for warm summer temperatures by drinking plenty of water\, applying sunscreen and seeking shade when needed throughout the day. Those planning to attend are encouraged to make overnight lodging reservations early\, as accommodations throughout town often fill during the holiday weekend. A variety of lodging options are available throughout town\, including historic hotels\, motels and bed-and-breakfasts \n\n\n\nVisitors interested in joining the Fourth of July Parade can find registration information and event details at visitvirginiacitynv.com/4th-of-july.  \n\n\n\nFor more information on Fourth of July events\, visit their website at visitvirginiacitynv.com\, call Virginia City Tourism Commission at 775-847-7500 or follow them on Facebook and Instagram.  \n\n\n\n### \n\n\n\nAbout Virginia City \n\n\n\nNestled on the mountainside of the Virginia Range\, Virginia City\, Nevada is one of the largest historic districts in the United States. Established in the mid-1800s with the discovery of silver\, Virginia City became a mining “boomtown” influencing prosperity and culture. While the Great Fire of 1875 destroyed much of the original town\, it was rebuilt to even greater opulence which can be experienced today and sparked preservation throughout the decades. Just 30 minutes outside of Reno\, its unique\, rich and colorful streets attract tourists from across the globe to experience the hearts of gold\, veins of silver and lodes of fun in every historic building\, saloon\, museum and memorable event. For more information\, visit visitvirginiacitynv.com or follow them on Facebook\, Instagram and Twitter.

SUMMARY:Paintings from the 1970’s on the Comstock - JoAnne Johnson Beck
DESCRIPTION:When: May – JulyReception: May 9\, 4-6 pmSaturday afternoons 2-4 pm during library hoursWhere: Silver City Schoolhouse\, 385 High Street\, Silver City\, NV \n\n\n\nThe Silver City Preservation Society is pleased to present a show of paintings by JoAnne Johnson Beck. The work was created in the early 1970s when Beck lived in Gold Hill and contributed artwork to the Gold Hill News. The work is whimsical and features characters\, and landscapes from the Comstock. They appear to be a combination of ink\, pencil and watercolor. They reflect the cultural and artistic freedom many people describe from their time in the 1960s and 70s on the Comstock.Jo Anne was born in Olympia Washington but spent her childhood first in the Mojave Desert and then in Sacramento where she attended Catholic school. Once she was old enough\, she moved around a lot and enjoyed many adventures. She lived on Vancouver Island\, in Gold Hill\, Nevada and Oakland and San Franciso where she an art degree at California College of the Arts. She worked in graphic design and in theater on costumes during her time in the Bay Area. Later she moved to Switzerland and then France. She lives in Montpellier where she is still a painter. The Silver City Schoolhouse is a historic one-room schoolhouse. It functioned as a school from 1868-1958. It opened during the Gold Rush when several thousand people lived in Silver City. After it closed in 1958 it became the firehouse and community center. The building burned in 2004 and was rebuilt over the next several years\, using as much original material as could be salvaged from the fire. The Silver City Volunteer Fire Department got their own firehouse building and today the Schoolhouse functions once again as a community center\, next to the beautiful Silver City Park. The building is used for community meetings\, town events\, parties\, art shows\, classes\, community art projects\, coffee houses\, lectures\, book readings and signings and much more. It also boasts a small but beautiful library. The Silver City Preservation Society (SCPS)\, a 501c3 nonprofit was recently formed to manage the Schoolhouse building and develop community programs and art and culture programming. Proceeds from the bar and bake sale benefit the SCPS.Silver City Arts is a committee of local residents who help produce arts and culture programming in Silver City. Silver City Arts volunteers graciously help with set up\, clean up\, run the bar and door and contribute magnificent baked goods. We could not do the series without them and are deeply grateful for their support.

Solos\, Duos\, Trios\, and full bands play every Saturday night. The stage is always available whenever there’s nothing scheduled\, and lots of musicians will come in and jam or rehearse\, so you never know who you might catch playing when you come in. \n\n\n\n“We’ve expanded into the next suite in the center and now have pool tables and a board game & puzzle table. Many tell staff that this is their home away from home. It’s so comfortable\, welcoming and fun to come in and chat with staff and friends. Don’t forget the Happy Hour from 3-5pm daily\, where domestic beer and well beverages are only $3 each. \n\n\n\nThe Polecat Summer Concert Series begins at 7pm on June 6 th with The Gary Wheeler Band and runs through August 29 th every Saturday with Local Anthology closing out the series.
