DESCRIPTION:Sierra Lutheran Students “Seize the Day” with Newsies Opening March 26The sounds of stomping feet\, turning newspapers\, and the rallying cry to “Seize the Day” are filling the gym at Sierra Lutheran High School as students prepare for the opening of Newsies on March 26. Directed by Mark and Becky Phillips\, the high-energy musical brings together students from across the school’s many activities\, including athletes\, musicians\, and performers\, to tell the inspiring story of young newsboys who stood up for what was right.Based on the historic 1899 New York City newsboys’ strike\, Newsies follows a group of young newspaper sellers who rally together to fight against powerful publishers after unfair price increases threaten their livelihood. Known for its athletic choreography\, memorable music\, and themes of courage and unity\, the show has become a favorite for high school theater programs across the country.Leading the cast is Lucas Allen as Jack Kelly\, the charismatic leader of the newsboys. Allen\, a senior who will attend Jessup University this fall\, has been a standout performer throughout his time at Sierra Lutheran and has earned lead roles in each of the school’s musicals since his freshman year. His commanding stage presence and vocal performance help anchor the production and carry the energy of the show.Opposite him is Madeline Lyons as Katherine\, the determined young reporter who helps tell the newsboys’ story. In addition to performing as the female lead\, Lyons has played a major role behind the scenes by helping choreograph many of the show’s dance numbers. Lyons has committed to Belmont University in Nashville\, Tennessee.Another standout performer is Delbis Mendoza\, who takes on the role of Davey. Mendoza previously appeared in a smaller role as one of the von Trapp children in last year’s The Sound of Music\, but this year he steps into a much larger role. His confident performance has quickly made him a notable presence in the cast.One of the most unique aspects of Sierra Lutheran’s production is the wide variety of students involved. The cast includes Scott Schroder\, a three-sport athlete who competes in football\, basketball\, and track; Cailyn Schroder\, the school’s MVP girls golfer; and Joseph Van Patten\, an Academic Olympian who skis and plays the cello. Their participation reflects Sierra Lutheran’s culture of encouraging students to explore their talents in athletics\, academics\, music\, and the arts.Directors Mark and Becky Phillips are now in their third year leading Sierra Lutheran’s theater program. Their first production\, Fiddler on the Roof\, helped establish a strong foundation for the program and was followed by last year’s successful staging of The Sound of Music. With Newsies\, the Phillips continue to expand the scope and ambition of the school’s musical theater offerings while providing students new opportunities to grow and shine on stage.Since taking the lead of the program\, the Phillips have helped grow both student participation and community interest in Sierra Lutheran’s productions. Each year the program has expanded in scale and ambition\, drawing students interested in performing\, stage production\, choreography\, and technical theater.As opening night approaches\, the students of Sierra Lutheran are ready to share the story of the newsboys who found the courage to stand together and make their voices heard. DESCRIPTION:“Stand Up for Democracy” Rally March 28 in Carson City Offers Art\, Music and Speakers as part of a Nationwide Movement \n\n\n\nIndivisible Carson City (INVCC) is offering a wide assortment of collaborative art\, speakers and community information at its “Stand Up for Democracy” rally March 28 from 12 – 2 p.m. in front of the Nevada State Legislature.  This is one of thousands of protests planned nationwide as part of the third No Kings National Day of Nonviolent Action. \n\n\n\n“We are standing up for democracy and against the authoritarianism of the Trump Administration\, but the atmosphere will be creative\, with local art and music\,” said INVCC leader Kelly Bennett Unger. “Join us as part of this national NO KINGS 3.0 rally. There are no kings in America\, and we will not be quiet while this administration tears apart families\, throws up bad economic policies that affect every household budget\, and threatens our allies and promotes dictators. Common sense tells you these actions are wrong.” \n\n\n\nVolunteer-staffed information tables will cover Voter Registration\, Get Out the Vote\, and Community Defense. A local artists’ collaborative invites participants to “Make Art Not War” with interactive exhibits and an installation honoring victims of ICE violence. For families\, there will be a Bad Bunny photo booth\, Sticker Mania\, and a Kid Zone with Face Painting and Masks.  Organizers are also asking attendees to bring canned food or dry goods for a donation to the Ron Wood Family Resource Center Food Drive.  \n\n\n\nFeatured speakers for the day will be Emilio Alvarez\, retired teacher and activist; Paula Berry\, activist for social justice and programs that support women and children; Kyle Allen\, outspoken political organizer and activist in Northern Nevada\, and Athar Haseebullah\, Esq.\, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada (ACLUNV).  Cedric Williams\, union representative for the Sierra Range Chapter for Local 4041\, will be the rally’s master of ceremonies.   \n\n\n\n“We have a schedule with singers and speakers talking about issues that impact our community here in Northern Nevada and beyond. We will be cleaning up the Washoe City Cemetery this Sunday\, March 29th starting at 8am. A cleanup like this hasn’t happened since 2019\, so the property has been overtaken by weeds and heavy brush growth\, and right now we only have 16 confirmed volunteers. Whether you’re here all day or for just a few hours\, any help is good help! Hope to see some familiar and new faces! \n\n\n\n Bring:• Gloves• Rakes• Clippers / loppers• Wheelbarrow (if you have one)• Water bottle• Sturdy shoes & comfy clothes• Trash bags (small debris) or trash  \n\n\n\n What We’ll Do:• Clear surface overgrowth & sagebrush• Pick up trash & debris \n\n\n\n Important:• No digging or disturbing graves• Be respectful of headstones• Watch your footing• No cleaning headstones  \n\n\n\n Extra Help Appreciated:• Dump trailers or tarps for brush• Donations of water/snacks/supplies \n\n\n\n Bonus:Before & after photos to show our impact! \n\n\n\n Thank you for helping preserve history!
