Spectators will be able to witness elite competitors showcase incredible strength\, balance\, and skill in iconic ancestral disciplines\, including: The Caber Toss: The signature event where athletes lift and balance a massive log vertically\, running forward to flip it completely end-over-end. The Stone Put: A traditional precursor to the modern shot put\, featuring athletes launching heavy\, natural stones from a standstill or a dynamic glide. The Hammer Throw: Unlike track-and-field\, competitors stand with feet firmly fixed to the turf\, whirling a heavy metal ball on a rigid four-foot shaft before releasing it for a maximum distance. The Weight Throw: A test of rapid spin technique and raw power\, where athletes use a single hand to hurl heavy metal weights equipped with a handle or chain. The Weight Over the Bar: An explosive vertical challenge where competitors use one hand to swing and toss a massive 56-pound weight cleanly over an increasingly high horizontal crossbar. The Sheaf Toss: A crowd-pleasing favorite where athletes use a traditional pitchfork to drive a 20-pound burlap bag filled with straw high over a raised bar. Beyond the athletic field\, the fairgrounds will come alive with the soul-stirring sounds of traditional Scottish bagpipes and Highland dance performances. She is a licensed therapist and has taught courses about people\, families\, and communities at Western Nevada College. She now presents to various historical societies and works with non-profit groups to preserve our historical resources. Her goal is to photograph and document the rich history of the area. DESCRIPTION:Witness History in the Re-Making For Yourself At the Sutro Tunnel & Historic Site in Dayton\, NV \n\n\n\nVisit the historic Sutro Tunnel site and see our progress! We are revitalizing and restoring the site and Tunnel daily. Join one of our guided history tours and see history in the making. Guided History Tours are offered twice a month starting at 10:00am (April – June\, Sept-Oct) and starting at 9:00am in July & August. Tours last approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours.  \n\n\n\nGuided tours are led by experienced historic docents that include Pat Neylan (co-curator/docent at St. Mary’s in the Mountain’s Museum in Virginia City and local historian)\, Lee Brunnell (of the Donovan Mill in Silver City\, CA)\, Dan Webster (author of Mills Along the Carson River) and/or Chris Pattison (Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity). \n\n\n\nLearn the history of Adolph Sutro and how this famous tunnel came to be. \n\n\n\nView historic machinery that has stood the test of time\, an electric mule ore cart\, the site’s historic buildings\, our private lake that is fed from water that still runs from the tunnel\, the original foundation of Adolph’s mansion\, our museum\, and of course\, the iconic Sutro Tunnel Portal and entry inside the Sutro Tunnel itself–which has how been restored to a distance of 315+ feet\, based on Adolph Sutro’s original design! \n\n\n\nHistoric places like this are fading to time and being pillaged. Thankfully\, this historically significant 28-acre site has been donated to our 501(c)(3) non-profit organization\, the Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity. \n\n\n\nRestoration of the Sutro Tunnel & the site’s 11 historic buildings is made possible through the sale of tours tickets and generous donations by visitors like you. DESCRIPTION:Carson City\, NV) Western Nevada College will host a special presentation celebrating Selections from “The Last Cowboy” by photographer Adam Jahiel on June 17\, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition features photographs depicting cowboys and ranch life in the Elko region\, offering a look at the enduring buckaroo lifestyle of the Great Basin.  \n\n\n\nGuest speaker Dr. Michael Fischer\, a local historian and former director of Nevada’s Department of Cultural Affairs\, will discuss what distinguishes the Nevada cowboy tradition and how cowboys in the region became known as buckaroos.  \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served.  \n\n\n\nSelections from “The Last Cowboy\,” a selection of platinum prints by photographer Adam Jahiel are on display from May 14 through September 9 in the Bristlecone Gallery on the Western Nevada College campus. The works in this exhibition are on loan from the Armuth Hellwinkel Family Collection.  \n\n\n\nVisitors can visit the gallery Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public\, located in the Bristlecone Building on the Carson City Campus\, 2201 West College Parkway\, Carson City.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition and this special presentation are official America250 Nevada events and a partner in the statewide Semiquincentennial celebration.
