SUMMARY:Scottish Tradition Meets Athletic Might: Great Basin Scottish Highland Games Return to Virginia City\, June 13–14
DESCRIPTION:Ancestral traditions and world-class athleticism will take center stage this summer as the Great Basin Scottish Highland Games (GBSHG) return on Saturday\, June 13\, and Sunday\, June 14\, 2026. Presented by the Northern Nevada Throwing Company\, this family-friendly weekend celebration brings the vibrant spirit\, history\, and culture of the Scottish Highlands to the Virginia City Fairgrounds.  Running from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on both days\, the festival offers an unforgettable weekend packed with heavy athletic competitions\, traditional music\, and immersive heritage displays designed to transform attendees straight to the heart of Scotland.  At the heart of the festival are the legendary heavy athletic events. Spectators will be able to witness elite competitors showcase incredible strength\, balance\, and skill in iconic ancestral disciplines\, including: The Caber Toss: The signature event where athletes lift and balance a massive log vertically\, running forward to flip it completely end-over-end. The Stone Put: A traditional precursor to the modern shot put\, featuring athletes launching heavy\, natural stones from a standstill or a dynamic glide. The Hammer Throw: Unlike track-and-field\, competitors stand with feet firmly fixed to the turf\, whirling a heavy metal ball on a rigid four-foot shaft before releasing it for a maximum distance. The Weight Throw: A test of rapid spin technique and raw power\, where athletes use a single hand to hurl heavy metal weights equipped with a handle or chain. The Weight Over the Bar: An explosive vertical challenge where competitors use one hand to swing and toss a massive 56-pound weight cleanly over an increasingly high horizontal crossbar. The Sheaf Toss: A crowd-pleasing favorite where athletes use a traditional pitchfork to drive a 20-pound burlap bag filled with straw high over a raised bar. Beyond the athletic field\, the fairgrounds will come alive with the soul-stirring sounds of traditional Scottish bagpipes and Highland dance performances. Attendees can explore a bustling Scottish marketplace filled with Celtic merchandise\, artisan goods\, traditional food\, and genealogy displays designed to help visitors research their ancestral roots and discover individual Scottish clan histories.  Since its founding\, the Great Basin Scottish Highland Games has continued to grow into one of Northern Nevada’s premier cultural festivals\, drawing athletes\, performers\, vendors\, and spectators from across the region to celebrate the enduring traditions of the Scottish Highlands.  Event Details:What: 2026 Great Basin Scottish Highland Games When: Saturday\, June 13 & Sunday\, June 14\, 2026Where: Virginia City Fairgrounds | 435 L St\, Virginia City\, NV 89440Tickets: Available for purchase online at www.greatbasingames.com/tickets For additional event information\, vendor applications\, sponsorship opportunities\, and the full event schedule\, visit https://greatbasingames.com/  About the Great Basin Scottish Highland GamesThe Great Basin Scottish Highland Games are an annual celebration of Scottish culture\, athleticism\, music\, dance\, and heritage held in Virginia City\, Nevada. SUMMARY:Paintings from the 1970’s on the Comstock - JoAnne Johnson Beck
DESCRIPTION:When: May – JulyReception: May 9\, 4-6 pmSaturday afternoons 2-4 pm during library hoursWhere: Silver City Schoolhouse\, 385 High Street\, Silver City\, NV \n\n\n\nThe Silver City Preservation Society is pleased to present a show of paintings by JoAnne Johnson Beck. The work was created in the early 1970s when Beck lived in Gold Hill and contributed artwork to the Gold Hill News. The work is whimsical and features characters\, and landscapes from the Comstock. They appear to be a combination of ink\, pencil and watercolor. They reflect the cultural and artistic freedom many people describe from their time in the 1960s and 70s on the Comstock.Jo Anne was born in Olympia Washington but spent her childhood first in the Mojave Desert and then in Sacramento where she attended Catholic school. Once she was old enough\, she moved around a lot and enjoyed many adventures. She lived on Vancouver Island\, in Gold Hill\, Nevada and Oakland and San Franciso where she an art degree at California College of the Arts. She worked in graphic design and in theater on costumes during her time in the Bay Area. Later she moved to Switzerland and then France. She lives in Montpellier where she is still a painter. The Silver City Schoolhouse is a historic one-room schoolhouse. It functioned as a school from 1868-1958. It opened during the Gold Rush when several thousand people lived in Silver City. After it closed in 1958 it became the firehouse and community center. The building burned in 2004 and was rebuilt over the next several years\, using as much original material as could be salvaged from the fire. The Silver City Volunteer Fire Department got their own firehouse building and today the Schoolhouse functions once again as a community center\, next to the beautiful Silver City Park. The building is used for community meetings\, town events\, parties\, art shows\, classes\, community art projects\, coffee houses\, lectures\, book readings and signings and much more. It also boasts a small but beautiful library. The Silver City Preservation Society (SCPS)\, a 501c3 nonprofit was recently formed to manage the Schoolhouse building and develop community programs and art and culture programming. Proceeds from the bar and bake sale benefit the SCPS.Silver City Arts is a committee of local residents who help produce arts and culture programming in Silver City. Silver City Arts volunteers graciously help with set up\, clean up\, run the bar and door and contribute magnificent baked goods. We could not do the series without them and are deeply grateful for their support.

The series starts on Saturday\, June 6 th with the rocking sounds of The Gary Wheeler Band\, and runs every Saturday Night at 7pm through August 29 thwhen Gardnerville based Funk-ProgressiveReggae-Space Rock Local Anthology will close the series. There’s even a rumor that there will be frozen margaritas this year! \n\n\n\nPolecat Tavern is a “Place for Music” located on West Winnie Lane in the old Lamplighter location. The owners Keith Alan Barnett\, an internationally known musician who performs at many local venues\, and his wife Chrissi Barnett \, a bookkeeper and graphic artist\, opened Polecat Tavern almost two and ½ years ago on December 14th \, 2023\, just a day after Keith turned 65. “Most people think about retiring at age 65\, but I started a new business.” Keith says laughing. “It’s been great though\, I never knew there was so much talent in the area.” \n\n\n\nPolecat Tavern opens at 2pm daily\, and has live music up to 5 nights a week with Open Mics\, Acoustic Jams\, & Karaoke\, on Thursdays\, Fridays\, & Sundays. Solos\, Duos\, Trios\, and full bands play every Saturday night. The stage is always available whenever there’s nothing scheduled\, and lots of musicians will come in and jam or rehearse\, so you never know who you might catch playing when you come in. \n\n\n\n“We’ve expanded into the next suite in the center and now have pool tables and a board game & puzzle table. We also have casino video games at the bar with poker\, black jack and more. Since we are non-smoking\, it’s an comfortable alternative place to game without all that casino smoke and noise.” Keith says there’s also a Gaming Happy Hour from 4 to 8 every night with specials when certain gaming combos are hit. \n\n\n\nOur customers have referred to Polecat as the local ‘Cheers Bar” as well as a “Working Man’s” tavern. Many tell staff that this is their home away from home. It’s so comfortable\, welcoming and fun to come in and chat with staff and friends. Don’t forget the Happy Hour from 3-5pm daily\, where domestic beer and well beverages are only $3 each. \n\n\n\nThe Polecat Summer Concert Series begins at 7pm on June 6 th with The Gary Wheeler Band and runs through August 29 th every Saturday with Local Anthology closing out the series.
