DESCRIPTION:The Carson City Symphony’s annual Pops Party concert will be held on Sunday\, June 8\, 2025\, at 6:00 p.m. at the Governor’s Mansion back lawn\, 606 Mountain Street\, Carson City. The grounds will be open to the public at 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. The main entrance for the concert is on Robinson Street. \n\n\n\nThe Carson City Symphony\, directed by David Bugli and assistant director Brian Fox\, will be joined on the program by the Carson Chamber Singers directed by Gary Schwartz and guest singer Monique De Haviland. Sierra Alphorn Players will provide pre-concert entertainment starting about 5:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nMusic Director Bugli said\, “The Pops Party Concerts are a tradition going back to 1985. We bring popular favorites and fresh material to each edition. The program this year includes tunes from Broadway shows\, James Bond\, Pirates of the Caribbean\, marches\, and more.” \n\n\n\nSeating is on the lawn. Parking is on the street. The audience is invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Snacks\, drinks\, and a food truck will be on site. No firearms are allowed on the premises. In case of rain\, the concert will be moved to an indoor location\, to be announced. \n\n\n\nThis free concert is funded in part by grants from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts\, Carson City\, and by private donations. Over 50\,000 people watched in amazement as a special gourd of water was moved from the highest lake in the United States\, to the lowest spot in the western hemisphere by a host of characters including Hop Along Cassidy\, an Indianapolis 500 winner\, the 20-Mule Team Wagon and many more. Even the President of the United States and the Governor of California were involved. DESCRIPTION:Mile High Jazz Band presents “On the Verge” \n\n\n\nBig Band Jazz and Poetry \n\n\n\nTuesday\, June 10\, 2025 \n\n\n\nThe Mile High Jazz Band\, singer Jakki Ford\, and nine award-winning poets and readers present “On the Verge\,” an evening of big-band jazz and poetry\, on Tuesday\, June 10\, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.\, at Gina’s Good Life Music & Lounge\, 507 N. Carson Street\, inside the Carson Nugget. \n\n\n\nThe music is free\, requested donation $10. Gina’s is a smoke-free\, climate-controlled venue\, and has a well-stocked bar and interesting specialty drinks. \n\n\n\n“On the Verge” features the 17-member band playing swinging songs on the theme of the evening in all its variations. Poets and readers are Rita Geil\, Terri Breeden\, Ursula Carlson\, Wayne Carlson\, Krista Lukas\, Melanie Perish\, Susan Sara Priest\, Timothy Rhodes\, and Reno Poet Laureate Jesse James Ziegler.  \n\n\n\nEach poem expresses an aspect of the theme and is followed by a tune that relates to the poem. Several tunes feature Jakki Ford singing with the band. Pianist and bandleader David Bugli said\, “We’d like to tell you the tunes we will be playing\, but that would spoil the fun. The audience can make connections between the poems and the tunes that follow them. You need to be there to experience it.” \n\n\n\nMile High Jazz Band performances and educational activities are supported in part by private donations and memberships\, and by grants from Carson City and from the Nevada Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts. The Thursday\, August 14 meeting includes guest speakers on Access to Healthcare and Nevada Care Connection and its programs to improve access to services and supports such as Medicare. \n\n\n\nHealthy Communities Coalition is comprised of local\, state\, federal and tribal group partners\, community volunteers\, and a board of directors and staff all working together on a common mission to strengthen communities in the Lyon and Storey regions by increasing access to 1) health care and prevention of alcohol\, tobacco and other drug use; 2) food security\, nutrition and gardening education and 3) sustainable\, community-based opportunities that serve the common good and strengthen local assets and self-reliance. DESCRIPTION:What’s not to like about Beach Boys songs whether you grew up listening to their iconic music in the 1960’s through the early 1970’s when they were at the height of their popularity\, or even six decades later as tribute bands continue to play homage to the era when all seemed right with the world and the Baby Boomers ruled the music scene. \n\n\n\nAs the Carson City Chamber celebrates its 80th anniversary on Friday\, June 13\, today’s governing board decided the best way to celebrate this milestone is to present a free family friendly concert under the covered Teixeira Pavilion in the east end of Mills Park.    \n\n\n\nThis family-friendly event features free Carson & Mills Park RR rides courtesy of Southwest Gas\, food and drink vendors and the effervescent and acclaimed Woodie & the Longboards\, reputed to be not only the best Beach Boys Tribute Band in the West but the only 5-star rated Beach Boys Tribute band in the nation according to the event services booking platform The Bash.  This hometown concert is brought to you courtesy of Hometown Health.    \n\n\n\nAlso featured to the delight of many children — and adults too — will be the Saltwater Tavern masted Viking pirate ship that was once featured for many years at Burning Man and in the Nevada Day parade.  Children will be able to tour the “real” ship. \n\n\n\nThe music of the Beach Boys is still the music for all ages and organizer and leader John “Woodie” Keating and his band have received rave reviews after playing for major corporations including Google\, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce\, National Bankers Association and many others along with performances at resorts\, casino and many summer nights at large venues on the beach. \n\n\n\nKeating founded the band in 2002 after a 13-year career as frontman for a Disneyland house band.  After leaving Disney\, he asked musicians he played with over the years to join his newly formed band soon to be known as “That 70’s band” and “That 60’s Band.”  Their perfect rendering of the iconic tunes of that time caught the attention of an agent who wanted to book them at an Oregon casino to play a Beach Boys tribute but preferred to promote a more beachy sounding name.  \n\n\n\nThus\, in 2007 they rebranded themselves as Woodie & the Longboards to better denote their passion for Beach Boys music.  Fans of the Beach Boys may remember the early record covers of the original band in various beach scenes that included a surfboard often referred to as a longboard. Thus\, they included the longboard in their name. and Keating became “Woodie.” \n\n\n\nKeating states\, “We’ve never looked back\,” and today\, this band from Riverside\, California continues to be popular\, playing over 100 shows annually. \n\n\n\nThe five-member band includes Keating or “Woodie\,” a passionate professional musician and frontman   In his youth\, he ran a music store before going into teaching\, still teaching fifth graders after 28 years. So good is he on guitar that actor John Stamos\, a drummer in the original Beach Boys band\, asked him to teach him the guitar.  Though a few of his bandmates have played with the original Beach Boys\, Keating never did. \n\n\n\nThe “Longboards” are talented professionals and play various instruments and are all considered to be top notch singers according to Keating. \n\n\n\nAndy Young plays the keyboard and guitar and is a “great bass vocalist singing the parts sung by original Beach Boys Mike Love\,” as stated by Keating. He  joined the band in 2008. \n\n\n\nJoe Manchego\,bass player\, has “toured with just about every one hit wonder from the 50’s and 60’s\,” states Keating.  Can you just imagine the stories he could tell!  He became a Longboard in 2016. \n\n\n\nDrummer Ricky Cosentinoformerly toured with the bands War and Ambrosia\, the hit bands of the early 70’s and joined the band in 2018. \n\n\n\nKeyboardist Mark Keating\, the son of Woodie\, first played with the band when in high school and has been playing on and off with them ever since.   \n\n\n\nThe band is very versatile and changes hats now and then performing as Heartache Tonight paying tribute to the music of the Eagles\, and The Hard Days Knights taking on the persona and music of the Beatles.  \n\n\n\nThe Chamber free anniversary concert begins at 6 pm with the free train rides beginning around 5:30 pm.
