William Street in Carson City. The concert features music by American composers. \n\n\n\nThe program opens with Bruce Roter’s A Birthday Celebration!. Guest soloist is mezzo-soprano Brittney May\, who will sing “Ain’t It a Pretty Night?” from Susannnah and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel with the orchestra. The concert includes the Nevada premiere of Gwyneth Walker’s America 250!\, Robert Russell Bennett’s Suite of Old American Dances\, and more. \n\n\n\nTickets are $18 general admission; $15 for seniors\, students\, and Symphony Association members; and free for youth age 18 and under. Tickets are on sale online at CCSymphony.com or at the door. “Flex” tickets at discounted prices are also available at CCSymphony.com. During the week before the concert (February 14 through 21)\, blood donors at Vitalant–Carson City may receive a complimentary ticket to the concert. \n\n\n\nPre-show entertainment by Kat MacMartin\, who will play American fiddle tunes\, begins at 3:00 p.m. in the lobby. The Extravaganza is sponsored by the Mile High Jazz Band Association as a benefit for youth jazz programs. \n\n\n\nPerforming with Mile High Jazz Band this year are the Carson High SchoolJazz Band directed by Nick Jacques\, the Carson Middle School Jazz Band directed by Stephanie Van Orman\, and the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra directed by Nichole Heglund. \n\n\n\nTickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. All proceeds go to the student performing groups. Youth age 18 and under are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased in advance at MileHighJazz.com\, or at the door. The BAC is offering a 4 week beginners guide to being creative with ceramic clay. This course will teach you the fundamentals of working with clay that leads to every other hand building project you will ever do. The examples shown are just that\, examples and not necessarily what we will create. We will make several projects that practice the basics and you will have several choices for your final project. Please bring your own apron or clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Each session will be 4 hours long and it’ll go by fast. Please bring a snack for yourself. We will provide all necessary tools and instruction. Please try not to miss any sessions as they are all critical to the success of this class. \n\n\n\nThe prices are $125.00 plus a $20.00 lab fee on the first day of class to the instructor.The Saturday class is free to students enrolled in the 4 week class. Carson Street\, Carson City.The program will be presented by Michael J. Smith\, a well-known Carson City educator\, civic leader\, and public speaker with a long record of community involvement. Smith is widely recognized as the host and organizer of Ideas on Tap\, a popular Carson City lecture and discussion series that brought residents together for thoughtful\, respectful conversations on civic\, cultural\, and social issues.Reflecting on the importance of Black History Month and its broader meaning\, Smith notes\, “Black history is American history. To celebrate America at this point requires us to fully situate ourselves within the narrative—not as a footnote\, but as main characters who have helped shape this American experience and the American story.”In addition to his work with Ideas on Tap\, Smith has served in several prominent public and cultural roles. He is a former member of the Carson City Cultural Commission\, where he advised on arts and cultural initiatives for the community. He also currently serves on Nevada’s Employee Management Relations Board\, a state board overseeing public-sector labor relations.
