SUMMARY:Paintings from the 1970’s on the Comstock - JoAnne Johnson Beck
DESCRIPTION:When: May – JulyReception: May 9\, 4-6 pmSaturday afternoons 2-4 pm during library hoursWhere: Silver City Schoolhouse\, 385 High Street\, Silver City\, NV \n\n\n\nThe Silver City Preservation Society is pleased to present a show of paintings by JoAnne Johnson Beck. The work was created in the early 1970s when Beck lived in Gold Hill and contributed artwork to the Gold Hill News. The work is whimsical and features characters\, and landscapes from the Comstock. They appear to be a combination of ink\, pencil and watercolor. They reflect the cultural and artistic freedom many people describe from their time in the 1960s and 70s on the Comstock.Jo Anne was born in Olympia Washington but spent her childhood first in the Mojave Desert and then in Sacramento where she attended Catholic school. Once she was old enough\, she moved around a lot and enjoyed many adventures. She lived on Vancouver Island\, in Gold Hill\, Nevada and Oakland and San Franciso where she an art degree at California College of the Arts. She worked in graphic design and in theater on costumes during her time in the Bay Area. Later she moved to Switzerland and then France. She lives in Montpellier where she is still a painter. The Silver City Schoolhouse is a historic one-room schoolhouse. It functioned as a school from 1868-1958. It opened during the Gold Rush when several thousand people lived in Silver City. After it closed in 1958 it became the firehouse and community center. The building burned in 2004 and was rebuilt over the next several years\, using as much original material as could be salvaged from the fire. The Silver City Volunteer Fire Department got their own firehouse building and today the Schoolhouse functions once again as a community center\, next to the beautiful Silver City Park. The building is used for community meetings\, town events\, parties\, art shows\, classes\, community art projects\, coffee houses\, lectures\, book readings and signings and much more. It also boasts a small but beautiful library. The Silver City Preservation Society (SCPS)\, a 501c3 nonprofit was recently formed to manage the Schoolhouse building and develop community programs and art and culture programming. Proceeds from the bar and bake sale benefit the SCPS.Silver City Arts is a committee of local residents who help produce arts and culture programming in Silver City. Silver City Arts volunteers graciously help with set up\, clean up\, run the bar and door and contribute magnificent baked goods. We could not do the series without them and are deeply grateful for their support.

SUMMARY:Artown Community Mural Reception: Art of Aviation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special artist reception celebrating a collaborative mural\, depicting the Artown poster artwork by many talented artists who brought it to life. This community-driven project unfolds as a vibrant display of creativity\, with each section contributing to a larger story of Northern Nevada’s pioneering spirit\, the history of flight\, and the innovation that defines our region. Meet the artists behind the work\, learn about their creative process\, and experience the mural up close as a unified piece. What begins as individual contributions transforms into a powerful collective artwork\, highlighting the impact of collaboration and shared vision. Set within the inspiring space of The Discovery\, the evening offers an opportunity to connect\, reflect\, and celebrate the role of art in bringing people together. The completed mural serves as a striking entrance centerpiece to a new aviation-themed exhibition\, helping build excitement for the inaugural Red\, White\, and Flight Drone Show. This unique community mural transforms a single artwork into a shared experience\, where 250 individual contributions unite to form one inspiring visual celebration of aviation\, innovation\, and America’s 250th anniversary. Each artist contributes a portion of the larger design\, resulting in a cohesive mural that reflects the creativity and spirit of Northern Nevada. This collaborative effort is made possible through the partnership of three community organizations. The George W. Gillemot Foundation supports the original mural artwork\, advancing aviation education and inspiring future generations. Artown brings the community mural experience to life\, inviting artists of all backgrounds to participate. The Discovery hosts the reception and showcases the finished piece\, creating an engaging gateway into the exhibition. Visitors are welcomed by a work created not by one artist\, but by 250 members of the community—making this mural a lasting symbol of connection\, creativity\, and regional pride. 250 artists. One vision. One community. One historic celebration.

SUMMARY:Trees: A Photographic Study in Determination at RPM for Artown
DESCRIPTION:Trees: A Photographic Study in Determination explores the intricate relationship between resilience and the natural world\, particularly through the lens of trees in various landscapes. Utilizing black-and-white photography\, the artist captures the stark beauty of these enduring forms\, revealing their character and strength against the elements. Each piece serves as a meditation on survival\, showcasing trees that stand alone or in clusters\, often in challenging environments. I am driven by a fascination with the stories that trees tell—how they adapt\, endure\, and thrive despite adversity. This exploration is influenced by my deep appreciation for nature and its ability to evoke a sense of tranquility and reflection. I find the monochromatic palette enhances the textures and contrasts within each scene\, inviting viewers to contemplate the interplay of light and shadow\, as well as the emotional resonance of solitude and perseverance. This is an Artown 2026 event.Event Link – https://www.renopublicmarket.com/events/trees-a-photographic-study-in-determination-for-artown-2026-07-05-12-00
