SUMMARY:Mark Twain Days - Mark Twain & Julia Bulette: Together Again
DESCRIPTION:7:30 – 9:30 PM$40 \n\n\n\nSamuel Langhorne Clemens\, known by the pen name Mark Twain\, was an American writer\, humorist\, and essayist. Clemens was praised as the greatest humorist the United States has produced\, with William Faulkner calling him “the father of American literature”. Twain’s novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer\, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn\, as well as Roughing It.After thirty-five years of school lectures and performances across the globe\, McAvoy Layne retired from performing as Mark Twain in 2023\, however he continues to find reasons to dust off the white suit for a good cause and a good time.Kim Harris is an accomplished Chautauquan who has portrayed living history characters at variousvenues including Genoa Western Heritage Days\, Pipers Opera House\, the Gold Hill Hotel\, the OdeonSaloon\, Dangberg Historic Park and The Lake Tahoe Chautauqua Festival.Harris currently serves as Events and Education Manager at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park inMinden\, NV\, and is the owner and operator of Western History ALIVE! where she portrays severalChautauqua characters including Calamity Jane\, Lizzie Borden and Libbie Bacon Custer.Julia C. Bulette was perhaps Virginia City’s most infamous “working girl”\, as well as a cherished member of Virginia Company #1’s volunteer fire department. In her own words\, Julia will share with her audience\, a world so often misunderstood\, with dignity and insight. She will tell of her most exciting life in which she was welcomed at society venues such as Maguire’s Opera House\, yet shunned on the street by the local women citizens. And\, she will recount her scandalous murder and what became of the man blamed for it. \n\n\n\nGet tickets: https://breweryarts.org/event/20251017-mtd-twain-and-julia/Brewery Arts Center | West Building | Performance Hall511 W. SUMMARY:No Kings Protest on October18th
DESCRIPTION:We heard you Carson City! You want a No Kings protest\, and you got it! Get your protest in early and then head over to the Brewery Arts Center to celebrate Mark Twain Days! We KNOW Mark Twain would be protesting if he was alive today! \n\n\n\nIn America\, we don’t put up with would-be kings. \n\n\n\nOur peaceful movement is only getting bigger and stronger. “NO KINGS” is more than just a slogan—it’s the foundation our nation was built upon. Born in the streets\, carried by millions in chants and on posters\, it echoes from city blocks to rural town squares\, uniting people across this country to fight dictatorship together. \n\n\n\nThe president thinks his rule is absolute. But in America\, we don’t have kings\, and we won’t back down against chaos\, corruption\, and cruelty. Grow our movement and join us.

SUMMARY:Mark Twain Days: On the Trail of the Jackalope with Michael Branch - FREE
DESCRIPTION:The never-before-told story of the horned rabbit—the myths\, the hoaxes\, the very real scientific breakthrough it inspired—and how it became a cultural touchstone of the American West. \n\n\n\nJust what is a jackalope? Purported to be part jackrabbit and part antelope\, the jackalope began as a local joke concocted by two young brothers in a small Wyoming town during the Great Depression. Their creation quickly spread around the U.S.\, where it now regularly appears as innumerable forms of kitsch—wall mounts\, postcards\, keychains\, coffee mugs\, shot glasses\, and so on. A vast body of folk narratives has carried the jackalope’s fame around the world to inspire art\, music\, film\, even erotica! \n\n\n\nBrewery Arts Center; East Building; Grand Ballroom449 W KING STCARSON CITY\, NV

SUMMARY:No Kings Reno Protest October 18th
DESCRIPTION:RENO\, NV – As President Trump continues to expand his authoritarian power grab\, thousands of northern Nevadans will come together with millions of Americans across the country in a nationwide day of nonviolent protest at the second No Kings Day of Action. There are currently more than 2\,500 events planned nationwide – more than twice the number as the original No Kings day – with new events being added daily. \n\n\n\nThe Reno event will take place from 11:00 am. until 1:00 p.m. and will include a march downtown from the Bruce R. Thompson Federal Courthouse building to the City Plaza (or Believe sign). The event will include multiple guest speakers\, including elected officials and other community leaders\, music\, a mariachi band and other live performances. There will also be a food drive on behalf of the Northern NV Member Assistance Program\, the charitable arm of the Northern Nevada Central Labor Council.  \n\n\n\nThe event is a collaboration between seven of the community’s most active pro-democracy organizations in the area including Indivisible Northern Nevada\, 50501 Northern Nevada\, Indivisible Carson City\, Bans Off Our Bodies\, Biggest Little Action Group\, the Northern Central Labor Council and Third Act Nevada.  \n\n\n\nAccording to organizers\, the more time Donald Trump spends in office\, the larger their movement becomes. “As President Trump continues to behave like he’s a dictator\, our numbers continue to grow\, so we are coming together once again to stand up and push back against his hateful\, authoritarian actions\,” said Aerial Torres-Johnson of 50501 Northern Nevada. “Our peaceful day of action will bring together local residents from all walks of life to reject this corruption and abuse of power. They’ve gone too far. But this country doesn’t belong to bullies\, dictators or kings – it belongs to the people.”  \n\n\n\nCarson City community organizer Lois Stokes of Bans Off Our Bodies says that as more Nevadans feel the impact of Trump’s policies and actions\, the more they want to push back. “He’s using OUR tax dollars to pay for HIS power grabs\,” she explains. “He’s pouring public money into his authoritarian takeovers of cities like Chicago\, Portland and D.C. He’s deploying federal forces\, seizing local police departments\, and funding mass detention and deportation operations while cutting services that working families rely on every single day. Enough is enough\, and for anyone who feels the same\, this movement is for you.”   \n\n\n\nOn June 14\, more than five million people across all 50 states joined No Kings in the largest single-day protest yet against President Trump’s authoritarianism. The October 18 day of action is the next step in this growing movement\, with over 2\,500 events registered to take part in another coordinated\, peaceful mobilization. In Nevada\, there are nine events registered to date\, including in Republican stronghold communities like Elko\, Hawthorne and Mina. A full list of partners for the national event can be seen at www.nokings.org/partners. \n\n\n\nFor a full list of participating cities\, event details\, and spokespeople available for interviews\, visit www.NoKings.org or contact media@nokings.org. \n\n\n\nAll No Kings events adhere to a shared commitment to nonviolent protest and community safety. Organizers are trained in de-escalation and are working closely with local partners to ensure peaceful and powerful actions nationwide.

SUMMARY:Embracing Change: Home\, Finances\, and Fulfillment
DESCRIPTION:Register here: https://www.retiredlivingtruthseries.com/event-details/embracing-change \n\n\n\nLife changes – sometimes in big ways\, sometimes in small ones. As we grow older\, many of us face life decisions about money\, housing\, health\, transportation\, or even who will help us in the future – and these decisions rarely happen in just a day or two. \n\n\n\nMost of us take time\, sometimes a lot of time\, to weigh our options. And that’s okay – planning for the next stage of life is a process\, not a one-time event. \n\n\n\nIn this month’s seminar\, our expert panel will share what they’ve seen while helping people through these important transitions. We’ll talk about:• Why taking time to plan ahead makes things easier later on• What really happens when people wait until a crisis to make choices• The “hidden” challenges beyond money and housing – like family dynamics\, letting go of independence\, and making sure your wishes are honored• Simple steps you can take now to prepare for future changes with more confidence \n\n\n\nWhether you’re thinking about downsizing\, staying in place\, moving closer to family\, or simply want to be ready for what’s ahead\, this conversation will give you insight\, encouragement\, and practical tips. \n\n\n\nYou’ll leave knowing you’re not alone\, and that there are people and resources to guide you through every step of the journey.
