No Kings Reno Protest October 18th
October 18 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
RENO, NV – As President Trump continues to expand his authoritarian power grab, thousands of northern Nevadans will come together with millions of Americans across the country in a nationwide day of nonviolent protest at the second No Kings Day of Action. There are currently more than 2,500 events planned nationwide – more than twice the number as the original No Kings day – with new events being added daily.
The Reno event will take place from 11:00 am. until 1:00 p.m. and will include a march downtown from the Bruce R. Thompson Federal Courthouse building to the City Plaza (or Believe sign). The event will include multiple guest speakers, including elected officials and other community leaders, music, a mariachi band and other live performances. There will also be a food drive on behalf of the Northern NV Member Assistance Program, the charitable arm of the Northern Nevada Central Labor Council.
The event is a collaboration between seven of the community’s most active pro-democracy organizations in the area including Indivisible Northern Nevada, 50501 Northern Nevada, Indivisible Carson City, Bans Off Our Bodies, Biggest Little Action Group, the Northern Central Labor Council and Third Act Nevada.
According to organizers, the more time Donald Trump spends in office, the larger their movement becomes. “As President Trump continues to behave like he’s a dictator, our numbers continue to grow, so we are coming together once again to stand up and push back against his hateful, authoritarian actions,” said Aerial Torres-Johnson of 50501 Northern Nevada. “Our peaceful day of action will bring together local residents from all walks of life to reject this corruption and abuse of power. They’ve gone too far. But this country doesn’t belong to bullies, dictators or kings – it belongs to the people.”
Carson City community organizer Lois Stokes of Bans Off Our Bodies says that as more Nevadans feel the impact of Trump’s policies and actions, the more they want to push back. “He’s using OUR tax dollars to pay for HIS power grabs,” she explains. “He’s pouring public money into his authoritarian takeovers of cities like Chicago, Portland and D.C. He’s deploying federal forces, seizing local police departments, and funding mass detention and deportation operations while cutting services that working families rely on every single day. Enough is enough, and for anyone who feels the same, this movement is for you.”
On June 14, more than five million people across all 50 states joined No Kings in the largest single-day protest yet against President Trump’s authoritarianism. The October 18 day of action is the next step in this growing movement, with over 2,500 events registered to take part in another coordinated, peaceful mobilization. In Nevada, there are nine events registered to date, including in Republican stronghold communities like Elko, Hawthorne and Mina.
