Democratic Luncheon to celebrate Women’s History Month
March 31 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
The featured speaker at Monday’s Democratic luncheon will be Jill Derby, a former chairwoman of the Nevada State Democratic Party who served for nearly two decades on the Nevada System of Higher Education’s board of regents. She also ran for the U.S. House of Representatives twice, representing the Democratic Party in Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District.
In 2023, Derby stepped down after serving seven years as board chair at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, in Kurdistan. She is still a board member. Through her service on a variety of boards and commissions, she has made significant contributions to higher education policy and governance, including as a Senior Fellow at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. A speaker of Arabic, she holds a doctorate in cultural anthropology from UC Davis, with a specialization in Middle Eastern cultures.
Jill’s activism began in the 1970s with efforts to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. In her 2024 memoir, When You Dare to Say Yes, Derby recounts her journey from a conservative upbringing on a ranch in Pershing County to emerging as a progressive political activist. Her talk, presented in recognition of March being National Women’s History Month, is entitled, “We Will Not Go Back.”
This event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, March 31st, and can either be attended in person at Seven Grille, inside Carson City’s Max Casino, or online via Zoom.
The presentation will begin after all lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30 PM. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links and videos should contact Rich Dunn at richdunn@aol.com.
In the noon hour (12:00 to 1:00 PM) community radio station KNVC General Manager Steve Funk will be present to promote their April 18thfundraiser, headlined by singer songwriter and down home humorist Antsy McClain.
This event is sponsored by the Carson City Democratic Central Committee, and is open to the public.
