Big Ideas Could Pay Off! $750 Scholarship Offered to Northern Nevada High School Seniors – Essay Contest Deadline October 29th

October 29 @ 8:00 am – 10:00 am

Northern Nevada High School Seniors Invited to Write About Community for $750 Scholarship
Northern Nevada high school seniors are being invited to share their ideas for making their communities better—and compete for a scholarship of up to $750 in the process.
The Alpha Nu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., which serves Northern Nevada, is sponsoring its 2026 High School Essay Writing Contest for college-bound seniors. The local scholarship is named in honor of community leader Rev. William C. Webb, and the winning student will also have the opportunity to advance in the fraternity’s larger essay competition, where the top international scholarship is $5,000.
The Carson City Historical Society is helping spread the word locally and encouraging Carson City students, families, teachers and counselors to make sure eligible seniors know about the opportunity.
This year’s topic puts the focus squarely on young people and their role in strengthening the places they call home:
“How Can Young People Use Leadership, Service, and Innovation to Create Positive Change in Their Communities?”

The contest gives students an opportunity to think about the role they can play in their own communities through leadership, service, creativity and new ideas. It also gives Northern Nevada’s young people a chance to have their voices heard on issues that directly affect the places where they live, learn and grow.
Essays must be 700 to 750 words and should be fully original, authentic work. Students will be judged on development of the topic, logical composition, clarity, grammar, punctuation and spelling.
The local deadline is October 29, 2026. The local winner is scheduled to appear at the chapter’s Achievement Week event on November 14.
Students should submit their essay and required application forms to Caesar Andrews at caesarandrews@gmail.com. The application packet includes a title page, essay release, media release and consent form, and submission checklist. For additional information, Andrews may also be reached at 313-505-5121.
The Carson City Historical Society is encouraging the entire community to help get the word out—particularly teachers, school counselors, parents, grandparents and anyone who knows a college-bound high school senior.
There is scholarship money on the line, but the contest is also an opportunity for Northern Nevada’s young people to tell us how they envision the future of their communities—and what they can do to help shape it.
