CARSON CITY — The Nevada Commission on Homeland Security, chaired by Gov. Brian Sandoval, has unanimously approved the funding recommendation provided by the NCHS Finance Committee to allocate funding for the Federal Fiscal Year 2013 Department of Homeland Security Grant Program totaling $3,286,396.
At the June 21, 2013 Commission meeting members approved the recommendation from the NCHS Finance
Committee to fund 18 of the 25 statewide projects submitted for consideration through the FFY 2013 Homeland
Security Grant Program. All the projects met the Commission’s funding priorities requirements that were determined at the March 28, 2013 meeting.
The final recommendation to the Homeland Security Commission was the last step of a collaborative process involving the Homeland Security Working Group, a body comprising 30 stakeholder and subject matter experts representing state, local and tribal government entities and the private sector. Recommendations from the HSWG were presented to the NCHS Finance Committee for review and evaluation and then recommended to the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security.
Total federal funding for Nevada’s share of the FFY 2013 HSGP is $3,286,396. This total includes funding for the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP). In prior years Nevada has received additional federal homeland security funding through the Urban Area Security Initiative program specifically targeted for the Las Vegas Urban Area.
In FFY 2013 the state did not receive any UASI funding. However, the state did receive approximately $700,000 of additional funds from the Department of Homeland Security over the FFY 2012 grant award.
The Commission also heard reports on the current status of the State of Nevada Network providing
information on the federal First Responder Network (FirstNet) activities pertaining to the federal commitment to the national public safety broadband initiative and an update on changes to the Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 239C pertaining to the Nevada Open Meeting Law, which provides for NCHS committees to hold closed meetings.
