The City of Fernley issued a notice today that there is a “critical water supply shortage,” and instructed all residents to implement immediate conservation measures.
These include ceasing all landscape watering, taking five minute showers or less, and “catching water in a bucket while waiting for it to heat up.”
Just after 3:30 p.m., the city issued an update:
The City of Fernley Water Treatment facility is back to normal operating capacity. Thank you for your cooperation in conserving water while Utilities made critical repairs.
The full notice is as follows. We will update with more information when it becomes available:
Our community is facing a critical water supply shortage. To ensure we have enough water for essential daily needs, sanitation, and emergency fire protection, all residents must implement immediate water conservation measures starting today.
Please take the following actions immediately to protect our shared water supply:
Stop All Outdoor Watering
- No Lawns or Landscaping: Discontinue all lawn, turf, and decorative plant irrigation.
- No Vehicle Washing: Wash vehicles only at commercial car washes that use recycled water.
- No Hardscape Washing: Do not use hoses to wash down driveways, sidewalks, or patios.
Reduce Indoor Water Use
- Check for Leaks: Inspect your toilets, faucets, and pipe connections for leaks. A single leaky toilet can waste hundreds of gallons a day.
- Run Full Loads Only: Only run your washing machine and dishwasher when they are completely full.
- Shorten Showers: Keep showers under 5 minutes. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing dishes by hand.
- Repurpose Water: Consider catching running water in a bucket while waiting for it to heat up, and use it to water essential indoor plants.
Please report any visible water leaks or water waste in public areas to the town utility office immediately at 775-784-9930.
Thank you for your immediate cooperation and dedication to protecting our community’s future. We will provide updates as conditions change.
