The Nevada State Police, Department of Public Safety has appointed Nathan Schmidt as Chief of the Nevada State Police Capitol Police Division, effective today, July 20, 2026.
Chief Schmidt brings more than 25 years of law enforcement leadership experience to Nevada State Police. Throughout his career, he has served in patrol, investigations, corrections, and executive command. Most recently, he served as Commander and Chief of Police for the City of Dublin, California, where he helped implement innovative public safety technologies and community-focused policing initiatives.
“We are pleased to welcome Chief Schmidt to the Nevada State Police,” said George Togliatti, Director of the Nevada State Police – DPS. “His extensive leadership experience, commitment to public service, and dedication to building strong partnerships make him an outstanding addition to our Department and the Capitol Police Division.”
Chief Schmidt is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership Institute and the FBI National Academy, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with an emphasis in Law and Society from the University of California, Davis. Following his retirement from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in 2024, Schmidt relocated to Reno.
As Chief of the Capitol Police Division, Schmidt will oversee law enforcement operations that provide safety and security for the Nevada Capitol Complex and other state government facilities.
