Described as a selection of ‘Opera’s greatest hits’ for those both seasoned listeners and completely new to the musical genre, the Tahoe Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus will be stopping for one-night only in Carson City on Wednesday, July 29.
“If you’ve ever said ‘Opera just isn’t my thing,’ then this concert is for you,” a spokesperson wrote.
“Nightz at Tahoe Opera” begins at 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community’s Center Bob Boldrick Theatre, 851 East William Street. The concert is designed for both longtime classical music listeners and those who may be unfamiliar with opera.
Under the direction of Maestro James Rawie, the orchestra and chorus will perform arias, duets, choruses and orchestral works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Gioachino Rossini, Georges Bizet and Jules Massenet.
The program includes selections from “The Magic Flute,” “Turandot,” “The Barber of Seville,” “Rigoletto,” “Nabucco,” “La Traviata” and “Thaïs.” Selections from “The Magic Flute” will be performed in English.
Concertmaster Kevin Matheson will perform Massenet’s “Meditation from Thaïs.” The program will also feature Puccini’s “Nessun dorma,” Rossini’s “Largo al factotum,” Verdi’s “Va, pensiero” and the finale from “La Traviata.”
Guest soloists will perform alongside the full orchestra and chorus.
Following the Carson City performance, the concert series will continue at 7 p.m. July 31 at Bartley Ranch Amphitheater in Reno; 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Reno; and 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Incline Village.
