On Wednesday, May 20th, the Ride of Silence will take place on the west side of Carson City in a powerful display of solidarity. Cyclists will take to the roads in a hushed procession to honor those who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roads. While cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, many drivers remain unaware of these rights and the presence of cyclists on the road.
In 2003, Chris Phelan inspired the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after the tragic loss of endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz, who was struck and killed by the mirror of a passing bus.
The Ride of Silence is a free event that encourages cyclists to ride at no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road, and embrace silence during the ride. There are no registration fees. This event, held during National Bike Month, seeks to raise awareness among motorists, police, and city officials about the rightful presence of cyclists on public roadways. It also serves as a poignant opportunity to honor and respect the lives of those who have been injured or killed.
