UPDATE: US-50 has reopened after it was closed down to provide a landing area for an emergency medical helicopter. According to the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD), they responded to Spooner Summit on the report of two people being injured in a snowmobile accident.

Both were taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno, one by the helicopter and the other by ambulance. Douglas County Sheriff’s Office shut down the highway for Air 12 from Battle Born Medivac. Assisting TDFPD were two rescue crews out of Carson City Fire.

UPDATE: Injuries have been reported in an accident involving snowmobiles late Sunday morning that happened on a trail near Spooner Summit, close to the US-50 and State Route 28 junction.

Reported at 10:40 a.m. to Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and East Fork Fire, crews arrived to bring at least two injured snowmobile riders to safety. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

A Care Flight helicopter was ordered. A landing zone was established near the turnout on US-50 and Spooner and traffic was stopped to allow for the air ambulance to land.

No word yet on extent of injuries. Motorists can expect delays.

At 11:46 a.m. some of the remaining rescue units from Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection and East Fork were leaving the scene after Care Flight landed.
