As legislators gather in Carson City for the November 2025 Special Session, construction is still in full swing on the exterior improvements and builds to the Nevada State Legislature building.
Like most of Carson City, the current Legislature building was completed in the 1970s, and has had a few upgrades here and there over the years, but this is a much larger undertaking spanning the entire exterior of the building — and includes some new structures as well.
A pre-construction look at the former building:
Prior to the formal session held earlier this year, the 6,600 square foot “blast box” was completed, which provided a secure new entrance on the west side which provides added security for situations such as shootings and/or bomb threats.
In addition, the parking garage on the east side of the Legislature is also getting a lift — literally, with additional floors of parking space added.
The full exterior is getting a revamp, as locals have been seeing with the previous siding having been peeled off, updated and replaced over the summer, which allowed a peek into the original stonework completed in the 1970s.
In addition, updates have been made to a there to ADA compliance, as well as asbestos and lead abatement and removal.
Now, it appears finishing aesthetic touches are underway, at least on the exterior. The new entrance includes a granite exterior, which has been quarried locally, just as in the late 1800s, early 1900s much of our historic buildings were constructed of locally quarried sandstone from the Historic Nevada State Prison.
The project is slated for completion in 2026, according to original estimates.
