A 16-year-old Carson City teen won a gold medal in Jiujitsu Saturday during a competition held at the University of Nevada, Reno events center.
James Cuthill, a Pioneer High School student, competed in the event hosted by Grappling X, which offers Jiujitsu tournaments throughout the West Coast. It was his first competition. James has only been training for the past 10 months.
James trains at JREAM Academy in Carson City. His coaches are Jack Montgomery and Sean Lebard. As a team, JREAM Academy travels to different events throughout the country.
For Saturday’s competition James had a 6-man bracket with a bye in the first round. In the second round he won by guillotine choke submission and his championship match he won 27-0. Saturday’s competition celebrated James for being the champion among the competitors in the event.

Montgomery explained that JREAM is an acronym for Jiujitsu Rules Everything Around Me. The academy has been in Carson City for seven years and there is a second location in Elko that’s been open for five years. JREAM is located at 1066 Mallory Way in Carson City. The website is jreamacademynv.com.
Between training, James works at Papa Murphy’s in Carson City. James said the JREAM Academy has taught him about patience when it comes to grappling and he hopes to compete more often.
“JREAM Academy has a lot of talented people,” he said. “Jack and the other coaches all teach great technique.”
