Who is Bob Zany?
At fifteen, Bob Zany first appeared on The Gong Show with a stand-up routine, only to be pulled offstage by a nun with a net. Eleven years later, he returned as a celebrity judge, kicking off over 100 national TV appearances. In 1981, while attending Mt. San Antonio College, he unsuccessfully applied for a newscaster job but later auditioned at The Ice House in Pasadena. Despite the owner’s initial rejection, Zany persuaded him to let him produce his own show, The Bob Zany Show, which featured emerging comedians like Garry Shandling, Yakov Smirnoff, Robert Wuhl, Kevin Nealon, and Nia Peeples.
Zany’s career took off after guest spots on Frazier Smith’s KLOS radio show led to his own Saturday morning program. He later created Bob Zany’s Comedy Outlets, which has over 50 locations in California and Nevada. His career highlights include releasing a comedy album, Hi Home, I’m Honey, and performing on George Burns’ Comedy Week after being hired by Steve Martin. A dramatic weight loss in 1991 altered his act, leading him to reinvent his stage persona into the cigar-smoking, audience-interactive comedian he is today.
Zany is married to comedienne Erin O’Connor, and they live in Los Angeles with their three dogs and three cats.
